It was not long ago that the Hooper Golf course was in danger of closing for good, but through local support and investment the golf course and its historic Watkins Tavern were saved. This landmark of New Hampshire golf is now more secure than ever and looking to celebrate its 100 year history in 2027. The Club hired Stein Golf Design to work with Construction to create a 3 year plan to restore this wonderful design. Amazingly Hooper Golf Course has not materially changed since its opening day in the summer of 1927 and our restoration work was largely aided by a 1939 aerial photograph and observations in the field of the golf course features as they were originally laid out by Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek. We have worked on tree clearing, expanding fairways and pushing the putting surfaces out to their intended dimensions. MAS was instrumental in the renovation of bunkers and repairing drainage throughout the golf course. We also worked together with the Club to modify the lower section of the 4th green which needed to be reconstructed to direct water around the front bunker and also recapture lost pin locations. For a local town golf course, these type of improvements are truly transformative and will help the golf course sustain itself as an asset to the community and become a true pilgrimage for keen golfers. Special thanks to Superintendent .j.neal.43 , Jim Neal, Patti Neal, and You all make Hooper Golf Course great! Hooper Golf Course is rated #13 best 9 hole golf course in the world by Golf Magazine and is one of ‘s gourmet choices in his Confidential Guide to Golf Courses

In honor of the 151st Open Championship I’m presenting two aerials from the home of golf earlier this year and a few more shots from the West coast of England at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club. All the photos highlight the rumpled and random contours which make up the golfing grounds loved (and hated) across the links. B&B is a perfect example to show the depth of good to great links golf throughout the UK. It’s somewhat incomprehensible when you consider all the courses on the Open rota (like Royal Liverpool) and then everywhere else that is still a must see. Burnham and Berrow is one of those places , with endlessly interesting and fun links terrain that does not disappoint (the photos don’t lie ;)

Last week I volunteered for the LPGA Championship and got back to my roots, filling divots with the crew for a few days. It was incredibly satisfying to see some of the bunkers I shaped in play during a major and really fun to be a part of the team. Congratulations to and for their incredible work, it was a privilege to be alongside everyone on this project!

World 100 Fellowship 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Visiting Carnoustie was one of the great joys of my trip, learning about the history of its design (Alan Robertson / Old Tom Morris) and great championship moments. The greens are undeniably tame compared to the array of bunkering to contend with, but rightly so as the golf course turns in every direction to the compass and wind is always a factor. Difficult par 3’s and the finish on 17 and 18 are a highlight of the design, as the serpentine “Barry burn” famously comes into play on multiple shots down the stretch

World 100 Fellowship 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 .dornoch Stunning day of spring sunshine 🏝️ ☀️ in the Highlands. 10/10 ! Dornoch is a complete links experience which I recommend to all golfers. The golf course has the hallmarks of great design which has evolved over the centuries of golf played over these links. All the greens, fairways, and bunkers just seem to be exactly where they should be , perfectly laying within the fine golfing turf. A spectacular routing makes the best use of two high plateaus and lower dunes close to the sea, transitioning from the high perch of holes 1,2 then hugging a giant wall of gorse , tumbling through the lower dunes for holes 3-6. The gorse, along with the challenging set of par 3s can make Dornoch seem like an intimidating test, especially when the wind and rough are up in the height of summer. The inward nine at Dornoch is famous for its variety and the way it hugs the coastal dunes, separating you from the sea by no more than 100yards. The challenging par 4s, and are a highlight along with the home hole with its hidden and abrupt contours at the mouth of the green. Thank you to my hosts, haste ye back!

Here is an image taken from above the 9th hole earlier this year during the height of summer. I love how the fescue and bluestem came in and highlighted the sand scape we created. Our work continues on the adjacent 7th hole this winter and we expect it to be a wonderful complement to what has already begun. Special thanks to and crew for making the finished product look so good throughout the year!

Last week was an exceptional week in my career while attending the conference in Providence Rhode Island. We visited amazing golf courses, talked with historians at Newport CC AND I was honored to receive an inaugural Fellowship from the World 100 Group to study golf in Scotland next Spring! I’ll be in St. Andrew’s for about 1 month, studying and playing in the home of golf! I’m extremely grateful for the ASGCA Tartan Associate Program and all the opportunities it has already afforded me to grow in the profession of architecture. I’m also especially grateful for a supportive family and wonderful girlfriend to join me along the way 🐐🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ⛳️ 🦙🥳
