To look or not to look? If you want to be a better partner it is very important to know what’s going on behind you. Are they on offense/defense, is their lob/ground stroke hit well, etc..this is important info that could make the difference. I see too often the net player facing forward and not knowing what’s coming until it’s too late.

Don’t worry about being uncomfortable and having bad results when learning a new serve, forehand, strategy, etc.

How do you decide who plays each side in doubles?
1. Stronger player on ad side.(All but 1 game point is decided on ad)

2. More aggressive net player should be on ad side. (Poach with forehand a lot)

3. If you have lefty/righty put the forehands in the middle (Stronger in the middle from player to player)

4. Changing return sides after a bad set could help start a comeback. (Having a new cross court shot could have better results)

Let’s talk about that dirty word no one likes….LOBS. What to do when you lob? What to do when you are lobbed?
1. The side that lobs-> both players move to “Hover” position around the service line. This will defend any and all things thrown at you. Great lob coming? Both can get it. Weak drive? Both can move forward and attack.

2. The side getting the lob-> player getting lobbed needs to switch and fall back to service line in order to help in a defensive position. Player on baseline has several choices-> 1. Try and move forward and over behind partner and grab ball out of air. 2. Move across baseline and take the ball after the bounce.

If other team didn’t move and still in 1 up and 1 back positions the ball can go two places, either down the line away from net player or if net player hugs the net a cross court lob will be easy.

When you transition to the net, make a pit stop around the service line. First ball coming back each player has 2 jobs. Net player guards down the line and attacks middle. Player at service line guards the cross court angle and the down the line lob over partner. That’s how you split the court 50/50 when both are at net.
