England just gave America an ADHD warning.
So naturally, I had AI dress me like Ginger Spice. 🇬🇧😂
Let me have my moment...
Where are my late-diagnosed ADHD millennials?
We grew up singing Spice Girls songs, collecting platform shoes, and being told we were “so smart” but needed to:
“Apply ourselves.”
“Stop talking.”
“Get organized.”
“Try harder.”
Welp…those children grew up.
And now England is getting a massive bill for decades of missed diagnoses and unmet needs.
NHS leaders just announced that ADHD and autism healthcare costs are becoming “unsustainable.”
In one area, monthly spending reportedly jumped from £146,000 to £1.5 million.
Another reported adult ADHD spending rising from £11 million to a projected £51 million.
Before someone says, “That is England. It has nothing to do with us…”
Oh, but it does.
England has a national healthcare system. They can see the referrals, waiting lists, provider shortages, and rising costs in one place.
America cannot.
Our ADHD bill is scattered across:
↝ Families paying thousands out of pocket
↝ Insurance companies
↝ Schools
↝ Workplace burnout
↝ Employee turnover
↝ Unemployment
↝ Lost income and productivity
The CDC estimated that 15.5 million American adults had a current ADHD diagnosis in 2023.
More than half were diagnosed as adults.
More than one-third were receiving no treatment.
So no, we are not waiting for this problem to reach America.
It is already here.
Maybe rising ADHD costs are not proof that too many people are suddenly getting diagnosed.
Maybe they are the receipt for decades of telling people their neurodevelopmental condition was a character flaw.
We need qualified providers.
We need strong assessment standards.
We need care after the diagnosis.
But “quality control” cannot become an excuse to close waiting lists, block access, or treat every late-diagnosed adult like they followed a social media trend into a doctor’s office.
ADHD did not suddenly become expensive.
Ignoring it did.
So yes, the Ginger Spice picture is hilarious.
But the warning coming from England is serious.
