Sen. Mike Lee Introduces Bill for Nationwide Constitutional Carry
A new bill introduced in the U.S. Senate could dramatically change how Americans carry fi****ms across the country.
Mike Lee (R-UT) has introduced the National Constitutional Carry Act, legislation that would eliminate concealed carry permit requirements nationwide for law-abiding Americans.
If passed, the bill would establish nationwide permitless carry, meaning eligible citizens who can legally own a firearm would be able to carry in public without obtaining a government permit.
Lee announced the legislation with a blunt message:
“Americans have the right to keep and bear arms without asking for permission from hostile politicians or getting jailed for crossing the wrong state line.”
What the bill would do
According to the proposal, the legislation would:
• Eliminate concealed carry permit requirements nationwide for eligible Americans
• Prevent states and local governments from requiring licenses or fees for public carry
• Protect lawful gun owners traveling across state lines from prosecution for carrying
Currently, 29 states already have some form of Constitutional Carry, but Americans traveling between states still face a confusing patchwork of laws where a firearm carried legally in one state could lead to serious charges in another.
Supporters say the bill would establish a national baseline protecting the right to carry, while still allowing:
• Private property owners to prohibit fi****ms on their premises
• Security-screened areas like courthouses and airports to remain gun-free
• Existing federal prohibitions on prohibited persons to remain in place
The bill has already received support from organizations like Gun Owners of America and the National Association for Gun Rights, who say it would restore the right of Americans to carry without government permission.
However, the legislation faces a difficult path in a closely divided Senate, where opponents argue removing permit requirements could undermine public safety.
Supporters counter that criminals already ignore permit laws, and that the right to bear arms should not depend on navigating a maze of state regulations.
Whether it passes or not, the introduction of the National Constitutional Carry Act puts the issue of nationwide carry rights squarely in front of Congress.
