The New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine delivered one of the most ingenious, comical, and unforgettable acts of defiance in Major League history by sneaking back into the dugout wearing a full disguise after being ejected from the ballgame.
During the top of the 12th inning at Shea Stadium against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Mets catcher was called for a tie-breaking catcher's interference by home plate umpire Randy Marsh. Valentine bolted out to argue vehemently and was instantly ejected.
Determined to see the finish, the manager went down to the clubhouse, put on a black Mets hat, a different jacket, and a makeshift fake mustache made of black athletic tape. Minutes later, he slipped back into the dugout and stood behind the players to manage incognito, sparking hilarious commentary when the television broadcast caught him on camera. Houston Astros rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña and veteran Venezuelan second baseman José Altuve combined for one of the funniest, most confusing, and highly discussed defensive bloopers of the postseason during Game 2 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies at Minute Maid Park. e
In the top of the seventh inning with two outs, the Phillies batter hit a routine grounder toward short.
Peña fielded the ball cleanly but, instead of throwing to first base for the easy inning-ending out, instinctively tried to flip the ball to second. However, Altuve knew there were already two outs and completely ducked down with his back to the play, clearing the throwing lane to first. Peña's unexpected flip softly bounced onto the dirt while "Astro Boy" crouched beneath it, creating an instant viral moment of pure miscommunication. Ultimately, the blunder was just a funny footnote as the Astros went on to win both the game and the World Series championship. Classic communication breakdown! 😂🤦🏻‍♂️⚾️
