We have an action packed night of polo tonight starting at 6:00PM on Ladew Field. We will have two games back to back! We will hold a brief divot stomp between the two games, but ask that all players change as fast as possible between chukkers in order to get everything in before the sun goes down.

In addition, due to heat we may play shortened chukkers and please stay on the lookout for any updates as there is a small chance of storms in the area.

Please sign up for Schedule Alerts if you have not done so already. It is not always possible for the club to make a social media posts within hours of a schedule change or weather hazards: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/cu/mQ2jbgC/MPCAlertSignUp

Opening Night of our 40th Season at Maryland Polo Club was a big success! We held the 2nd Annual David Silvestre Memorial to honor the late David Silvestre, who was an important part of Maryland Polo Club in so many different ways. TTR Sotheby's International Realty Travelstead Team came out victorious in the round-robin format featuring three teams. Tori Picha was awarded the "Horsemanship" award. While PJ Orthwein's lovely pony, "Buckwheat" won the Best Playing Pony prize sponsored by The Mill. Our sidelines were completely sold-out, and our "Hill" was covered with families having picnics. Liz Pearce McKnight founder and contributor of Weber and Ladew Fields, was present on the sidelines entertaining new polo player/jockey Tom Garner and Devon's children. Fernando Pelosini and Courtney Asdourian Pelosini wee ones were trying to get out to the field to play polo with their dad! Our new VIP area on "The Hill" was debuted by Jim Lillie's Orchard Wealth Management. Locals Georgia Knox Catalfamo and Tim Bricken filled up the other VIP tent with friends.

All our volunteers were out in full force! Special thanks to Michael Finney for announcing, Dawn Frick for managing the entrance gate, Patrick and Darin Bunky Martin for assisting Club Manager Parker Pearce with awards presentation and whatever else Parker needed to put our venue together. Our 40th Anniversary merchandise was handled by Charlie, our best salesman of the summer! Thanks to Attman's Delicatessen food truck for giving our venue a trial run. As always, we are grateful for the MPC photographers that came out to take photos on such a beautiful evening.

Tisa Della-Volpe , J. Mitchell Adolph, Leisa Kelley. Bob Burkhard and Holly Hall Pearce captured award photos.

And big shout-out to anyone else that we may have missed that contributed to our season opener and the past 40 years of Maryland Polo Club!! More club matches this weekend Friday at 6pm and Sunday at 11am.

Opening Day is here this Friday, June 5th!!! Gates open at 4:15pm...2nd Annual "David Silvestre Memorial" Match starts at 6pm... Attman's Delicatessen Food Truck will be on the grounds prior to the match, so leave your picnics at home this week, arrive early and try out some fantastic "authentic" New York cuisine!

Club Manager Parker Pearce and his assistant Patrick, have worked tirelessly alongside dozens of club volunteers throughout the month of May and every day this week until dark to prepare the fields, sidelines, sponsor banners, reserved parking spaces, side boards, and the new VIP parking area for this season. The pre-season turnout from members and their families to develop an exceptional polo venue like never seen before at Maryland Polo Club has been quite an achievement, and is what defines our little slice of the United States Polo Association community. We are extremely grateful for the grants from the United States Polo Association which have helped our club reach a new level of play.

All Parking Passes were mailed out three weeks ago. We are anticipating a sell-out crowd, so please remember to hang your tags from your rearview mirror to keep traffic moving along. General Admission per car is $25 CASH ONLY, please have your money ready to hand over to our ever-ready gatekeeper, Dawn. There will be a designated parking area for Season Subscriber and General Admission overflow parking. Please do not be discouraged if Season Subscriber sideline parking is full. Parker and his team of landscapers have cleared "The Hill" which offers an incredible view overlooking Ladew Field and picnic area that is worth exploring.

Mother Nature is predicting a partly sunny warm summer evening for the beginning of our 40th Season, and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone with an exciting round-robin match with plenty of action!

PHOTO RESULTS: "Grand Prize Cover Photo Winner" ~ Bob Burkhard

We are pleased to announce that Bob Burkhard has won the 1st Place Cover Photo award winning image this year with his "Ponies and Equipment" entry found on page 51. Bob Burkhard attends almost every game, has a fun time shooting photos, and socializing with players.

Sometimes a photo is submitted to our contest that has no action, no riders, no spectators, and none of the moving parts that we instinctively relate to the fast thrill of watching polo. Normally, this type of image falls into the proper category, but never makes it to the cover of the magazine. What caught our attention in this photo was the tone and the subject. These two ponies calmly standing at the trailer are the key to success at a polo match in so many ways because without a pony...there would be no vehicle for the player...no game for the spectator...no thrill of an equestrian team sport...no reason to go outside!

Polo begins with the proper pony. It is every player's dream to play the "perfect" pony. These two ponies have seen a lifetime of "perfect" polo. Shown here are: "Butterface" and "Churro." They belong to Posey Obrecht, who has played at the Maryland Polo Club since she was a teenager. Posey coaches the interscholastic team RUDA out of the Garrison Forest School during the school season. During the summer months, Posey is known as a dependable horse provider for her students learning to play outdoor polo. Without Posey bringing her ponies "for lease" to our fields, a lot of intermediate players would have no way to compete and learn grass polo. Ponies such as "Butterface" and "Churro" are worth their weight in gold to a coaching player like Posey because during the week they are settled enough to carry a beginner safely onto the field, yet they are also capable of competing at a higher level of polo on the weekends for Posey when she participates in a tournament herself.

So this summer, when you see a bunch of ponies "just standing" at the trailers and you are in a hurry to get to the sidelines to watch some action...please stop for a moment and try to imagine the excitement that these ponies are about to provide you, the players, and the Maryland Polo Club. Open up your polo magazine that was given to you at the entrance and flip through the pages to the "Best Playing Pony" (BPP) awards. You will see proud players smiling from ear to ear holding their pony and posing for the coveted BPP award!

Thank you, Bob Burkhard, for capturing the essence of polo with such a keen perspective that also compliments the contents of our annual polo magazine!

We look forward to seeing everyone this Friday, June 5th at 6pm for Opening Day!

PHOTO RESULTS: "Non-Action" ~ John Drennan

2nd Place in the Maryland Polo Club annual photo contest goes to one of our most well-known photographers, polo fan, Monkton native , and friend to us all, John Drennan.

This photo is "cover worthy" as it displays the serenity of our venue, including action in the background, and a close up moment of two well conditioned ponies and their loyal grooms waiting their turn on the field. The grooms are vital to a player's form and organization when playing. In the background, John Drennan, captured both teams, an umpire and most likely a penalty shot about to be taken. Composition-wise the background is almost entirely in focus, yet he managed to soften the image with a slight haze to distance the action while keeping the foreground crisp as the focal point. If you are a photographer, you are aware of how difficult this technique can be with only natural outdoor lighting available.

Congratulations, John Drennan, for all of your photo contest submissions and presenting highlights from each tournament last season for our records!

This photo can be found on page 49 in the 2026 annual polo magazine.

Stay tuned as we reveal the cover winning photograph before Opening Day this Friday, June 5th at 6pm featuring the 2nd Annual David Silvestre Memorial!!! Gates will open at 4:45pm.

PHOTO RESULTS: "Individual" ~ Leisa Kelley

3rd Place in our annual photo contest goes out to Leisa Kelley. Leisa won the Individual category with an exceptional close-up photograph of our club's 7 Goaler from Uruguay, Nachi Viana. Here Nachi is taking a neck-shot under his horse. The communication between horse and rider is one of trust and calmness. It is a unique angle in which Leisa took this photo enabling us to see the skill and position of the rider versus a head-on focal direction.

Leisa is known for her images of children and pets all around the polo grounds. She is very good at capturing emotion in a photograph.

This photo can be found on page 59 in the 2026 annual polo magazine.
