7 AUGUST 1782. General George Washington creates the Badge of Military Merit - the nation's oldest military award. The design would inscribe the word "Merit" within the borders of a purple heart.

Though never officially abolished, the award fell into disuse. On February 22, 1932 - to coincide with Washington’s 200th birthday - the U.S. War Department announced the creation of the “Order of the Purple Heart” and the revival of the award's lineage from the Badge of Military Merit.

Building off of Washington's original design, the new Purple Heart would display a bust of Washington and his coat of arms.

Since its creation, the Purple Heart has been given to over 1.8 million service members, including those retroactive to previous conflicts.

Thank you to all who have made this sacrifice to our grateful nation.
