I am a little hesitant to post this video because I know that without context, that it may not look like what it actually is.
This swimmer has unique learning and processing needs. He is safe, supported, and working on a skill that took months to achieve. This video captures a major milestone in his swimming journey.
We have been working with him for many months to help him recognize the wall as a safe place and independently choose to move to it when he needs it.
For many swimmers, reaching for the wall seems natural. But for some individuals, understanding danger, recognizing when assistance is needed, or seeking help can be much more complex. They may not instinctively move toward safety, even when it is right beside them.
This swimmer is already comfortable in the water. He can float independently, maintain a float for extended periods, and get himself into a floating position on his own. The challenge was helping him connect those abilities with making the choice to move to the wall.
After months of practice, he did it!!!
Not once. Not twice. Over and over again.
These video was taken after many successful attempts, when he was beginning to get tired. What you're seeing is not a child in distress. You're seeing a child accomplish something that took months of patience, trust, and determination.
There were times when professionals suggested this skill might never be possible for him. We never stopped believing otherwise.
This week, he proved what we've known all along: he is capable of so much more than many people realize.
And honestly, that's one of my favorite parts about teaching swimmers like him. They have a way of reminding all of us not to place limits on what someone can achieve.
