My last warmblood went peacefully to the rainbow bridge last Thursday. It's the end of an era.
In 1984 I had the opportunity to purchase a very hot thoroughbred mare from my trainer Elizabeth Johnson. She was a seal bay and one of the most drop dead gorgeous horses I had ever seen. I competed with her in dressage, jumping and 3 day eventing. I didn't know she would be my last event horse. She was entered into the KWPN main mare book after an inspection.
Her second foal, Nepenthe was born late in the afternoon. He grew up right in my front yard. When it came time to ride him, after a few baby mistakes he proved extremely smart and trainable. However, surprisingly, unlike his mom Who was as bold as they come, he was very fearful. Even trotting over poles made him extremely nervous and going out on the nature reserve that abuts our property terrified him. So, we focused on dressage and made it all the way to fourth level. Showing always was interesting because of his sensitive nature. He required a very structured familiarization and warmup routine. But I guess he thought dressage arenas all seem alike...until they decided to put yellow caution tape in front of the judges stand at San Marcos equestrian center or when they let the cattle out at Creek Hollow. That was the day he demonstrated an excellent piaffe - however not required at that level.
At home he was sweet gentle and easy to ride. In his last few years he was able to be a schoolmaster and teach flying changes (at his prime he could 2 tempes ) and lateral work.
But around his 18th year he just had arthritis everywhere and no amount of Bute or prevacox could keep him riding sound. So he spent the next 10 years retired on the same property where he was born. For quite a while he could still gallop for a few laps and have fun, but this last year he lost most of his molars and we couldn't trim his feet because it hurt to put all his weight on one foot. So in consultation with my vet, we decided to let him go on a good day, before the next crises. He would have been 29 in may.
Rest in peace my idiot savant.
