A baby from 6 months to 12 months of age can learn to hold their breath under water, roll onto their back and float, rest and breathe until help arrives. It takes approximately 4-6 weeks for a baby to master these skills. A child from 1 year old and up can learn to hold their breath under water, swim face down, roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, then flip back over and continue swimm
ing. They continue this "swim-float-swim sequence" until they reach the safety of the pool side or the steps. To master these skills takes approximately 6-8 weeks. After they have learned to perform these skills independently, all children then practice these skills fully clothed. Each lesson is no more than 10 minutes long and students attend lessons 4 days per week, Monday through Thursday. This schedule is key for the retention of skills.
