Team in every sense of the word!

Yesterday and .calls.the.spots, we-along with and Sara Wilkinson, completed the hero workout "Chad", in honor of Navy SEAL Chad Wilkinson who took his life on October 29, 2018 due to the effects of numerous deployments, several TBIs, blast wave injuries and PTSD.

Our goal is to honor Chad's life and legacy and by raising awareness for su***de prevention.

All proceeds from Chad 1000X patches and t-shirts sold will go to brain and mental health programs funded by the Navy SEAL Foundation, a GORUCK Official Partner.

From Sara Wilkinson, Gold Star Spouse:
"My husband, Navy SEAL Chad Wilkinson, served honorably for 21 years. When Chad took his life he had everything to live for: myself and our children, extended family, his fellow brothers and our community.

This is a silent disease where symptoms, triggers and warnings are often recognized too late. Chad is not alone, this is a silent epidemic with the enemy sneaking quietly into our homes and it has to stop. We want to use Chad’s life and legacy to raise awareness for su***de prevention. Our hope is to remove mental health stigmas, and encourage people to reach out, one step at a time, no matter who you are.

Our goal is to honor Chad and all Veterans currently struggling this and every Veterans Day moving forward. I hope you’ll join me and our community in doing the Hero WOD that Dave Castro named after my husband Chad, supporting the Navy SEAL Foundation."

Real Talk on Veteran Su***de Prevention:

1,833 American service members have died in combat in the war in Afghanistan.
3,836 American service members have died in combat in the war in Iraq.
33,686 American service members died in combat in the Korean War.
47,424 American service members died in combat in the war in Vietnam.
53,402 American service members died in combat in World War I.

But since 9/11, over 108,000 American veterans have killed themselves…

Hopefully that number stops you in your tracks.

Benefits of torso rotations:

- improve movement involving flexion and extension or bending forward and backward
- increased mobility and strengthened obliques, which can add power to rotational movements
- improves rotation in your golf swing
- stronger abdominal and back muscles take pressure off the spine

Squeezing a ball or other object in between your knees when performing this movement helps set the pelvis in the right position and allows the lower back to relax freeing up the t-spine to move fluidly.

A brilliant quote from an inspiration man!
-
Lately, I have been reading Dan Crenshaw’s book Fortitude.
-
discusses building personal character. Crenshaw calls this kind of character “fortitude”: the aggregate of several positive personality traits. A short list would include perseverance, positivity, personal responsibility, attention to detail, good humor, a sense of purpose, humility, a calm mind, reason over emotion, a desire to always improve, self-awareness, and a sense of gratitude.
-
Admiring individuals as heroes will leave you disappointed and/or disillusioned. But, we are better off looking at hero archetypes and their combined positive character traits to better mirror and influence our personal lives.

The thruster is one of the most humbling movements...

No matter the type of equipment used, there aren’t many exercises that can compete with the all out full body taxation of the thruster.
-
In fact it should probably be called the “punisher”. It’s amazing that the movement is such a simple front racked squat to push press. But, try telling your body it’s simple after only a few reps.
-
You can find a fun thruster workout below.
-
For time: 21, 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, 3,
Thrusters (you choose the weight)
Burpees

Complete each round of the Reps prescribed of both movements before going on to the next round!

Good Luck!

Working on my weaknesses until they are my strengths...
And, my strengths become second nature.
-
It’s an uphill climb.
-
We all love working on the things we are already good at doing.
-
But, to put in the time on those that we struggle with, is what separates you.
-
Find a skill set that you loathe but also aspire to become better at performing. It doesn’t have to be fitness. It can be an art, communication skill, relationship trait. Whatever it is, and start working on it today, not tomorrow.

Lately, one of my favorite things to incorporate into my programming is complexes.
-
Here, the Dumbbell Power Clean and Jerk can be broken down into three simpler movements:
1) Dumbbell Deadlift
2) Dumbbell Clean
3) Push Press

And, finally completing the Dumbbell Power Clean And Jerk.
-
Things to consider:
1) Reducing the amount of weight you chose because you will be completing multiple reps of each simpler movement before completing the final movement
2) Choose a rep count that is difficult but manageable
3) Think about grip you consider. The simpler movements will exhaust the entire body before you get to the Power Clean and Jerk, so keep in mind mechanical advantages. For example, maybe use a grip that is closer to the front of the head of the dumbbell because the clean may whip over more efficiently to set you up for the push jerk.
-
Hope this helps!
