When I was preparing to open Casita in 2018, I met with a PR coach to discuss how to promote the business in an upcoming press release. I explained that my goal with the studio was to create a welcoming, non-pretentious space for mindful movement and introspection, where people could feel more grounded in themselves and their purpose and therefor more effectively show up for themselves and their community. I explained that this was an expression of community activism.
I was advised not to take this angle, as it could be perceived as “too political” and could turn away potential customers.
I decided that I was ok with that.

My first yoga teacher often reminded her classes that the first rule of yoga is “ahimsa” or, “do no harm.” This means non-violence in actions, in intentions, in words, and in thoughts. (I see a theme arising for next week’s classes…) In solidarity with the nation-wide strike against government-sanctioned violence in all of those categories, our studio is closed today. 🙏🏼
To all of you who were able to refrain from work, school, and shopping today, thank you for taking a stand. To those who weren’t, there are so many other ways to help. Don’t let yourself become apathetic.
We will gather on our mats again tomorrow ✨ and I hope to see you there. 9am Vinyasa Flow, 11am Parent + Toddler yoga. Remember to sign in so we know to save a spot for you.
Thanks for being here. ❤️
