Donomore Cabin

Donomore Cabin The Donomore Cabin was built in 1935 as a line cabin for ranchers running cattle in the mountains during the summer.

It sits on the Pacific Crest Trail in California near the Oregon border. Cattlemen built the line cabin to help manage their cattle on the range from the Applegate River and the Klamath River. The cabin sits on the Pacific Crest Trail where it has suffered from neglect and abuse. The Offenbacher Family and friends hope to stabilize and refurbish the cabin to honor its place in history. Settlers Donomore (was it "Dono Mareau"?) and Silvee were killed by Indians during the Humbug War of 1855, so they say. Settlers continued to hunt, mine, run cattle, and live in the area. The 2026 Clean-up Crew in July. The cabin had 580 visitors who signed in, 105 of those from 25 countries outside of the United States. Thank you to everyone: No vandalism!

Goal being met: preserving the cabin to indicate its use and value to deflect abuse and vandalism and saving its history for everyone to enjoy this magical place.

July 2026 clean-up crew. 580 folks signed in this year so far. 105 of those were from outside USA, representing 25 other countries. NO vandalism!

The goal was to restore the cabin to dignity so that it would less likely be vandalized and to preserve its history for public use. Wow. The hard work was a success. Thank you, visitors and keepers.

Boatswains Mate Charlie Offenbacher writes home to his parents in 1944 from some place in the Pacific Ocean on the USAT Aconcagua:

Maybe this time next year I will be home for good. Sounds too good to be true though I am afraid. I am going to take Dorland and enough grub to last awhile and hit for Donomore to do as I dam (sic) please!

This mountain meadow and its cabin are mentioned throughout his letters home which are being catalogued for preservation. Clearly it was a special place for Applegaters.
