Punk’s for weirdos and righteous anger and a lot of time about performance. Otoboke Beaver knows how to put on a performance.
San Francisco is a new town to me so I got caught up watching a dragon parade which brought me to the club a little late. I did catch most of Drinking Boys and Girls Choir set from the back of the dance floor (capacity 1350 to give you an idea how far back I was) sipping on an $18 beer. I guess that’s the price of success and the reason I only had one beer that night. DBGC puts on a fun upbeat sincere show with a perfect amount of chatter between songs. I’d definitely go see them again. As they finished their set I watched as the dance floor thinned out and started making my way to the stage.
I got a little over half way there and waited patiently. I ended up making friends with some other people my age who had done their time like me. We discussed the old days as old people do.
I was told by my friend that people don’t dance on the west coast so I didn’t have to leave my glasses in the hotel room. That was proven wrong immediately when Otoboke Beaver started playing. The crowd started moving which was an advantage for me because I was getting pushed to the stage! And I managed to keep my glasses on!
It’s usually a disappointment when you’ve built up a band for a while and then you see them and it’s not what you were expecting. Otoboke Beaver was not a disappointment. When you put people this talented together you sometimes get a performance like this. Very precise playing, super tight with a little bit of choreography thrown in. Angry violent thrash juxtaposed with beautiful voiced sing along chants made this an incredible set, Yoyoyoshie’s banter and hype really made every aspect that much more entertaining. The power of presence of Accorinrin is magical and intimidating (she shut up a heckler with a glance and the whole crowd goes oooooo.)
Hirochan and Kahokiss kept the pace super fast as the blast through the hits like Pardon? And Yakitori! And crushed I checked your cell phone but also kept us dancing through less known songs! For years I have been searching for that first time The Police played CBGBs moment. I think this is the closest I have gotten.
I’ll be thinking about these girls for a while!
