After a great summer it’s back to school and fall baseball!

Yesterday we had a hand full of guys at an optional workout for hitting and conditioning. When the conditioning was done I got them together and I pointed out a large piece of goose grass that had grown through the artificial turf in front of the mound. It was so big I couldn’t pull it out without pulling the turf up with it. I told the boys that w**d wasn’t always a big w**d it could’ve been pinched and pulled a while back.

I told them “Little issues can become big problems. So let’s say you hit a fly ball to left and it is caught. But while everyone is watching the ball you’re jogging to first and only the coach notices you didn’t hustle. What could he do?”

The boys all got a guess and then it was said, “He could do nothing”.

“That’s right, the coach could do nothing and the little w**d would grow. Soon the batter wouldn’t be taken the right lead at first, or an aggressive secondary, then he’s late to second base and it’s an easy double play in a close game.”

Then I asked the boys, “of all the ways the coach could’ve handled it what response would the bad coach give?” They all agreed, the coach that did nothing.

Players want to be coached. They want to be challenged and corrected and get better. But when corrections and discussion become scrutiny the coach will turn the player off and the communication breaks down. Eventually the player seems uncoachable and relationship is gone. But the reality is, the coach and the player want the same thing, but the challenge just seems too big to keep trying and the love of the game is lost.

Push the players and keep it fun. Be consistent about the details. Celebrate the little wins too. They’re not kids long.

So here’s the real story behind what happened at CDP. It’s started when our founder Lance Heck took an awesome bunch of kids to Dreams Park with the Ormond Beach Golden Spikes in 2012. The boys had a blast, but they were just one of 104 teams trying to navigate an amazing week and play as deep as they could. They finished somewhere in the middle third but at the closing ceremony, Coach Lance walked over to home plate and took a picture of it. “One day, I’m coming back to win this thing”.

He told people all spring Rob’s guys are going up there to win it… and they did just that. Standing on the top row of bleachers, waiving a giant Arrows logo flag looking down on his own 11 year old son thinking about coming back next year, he thought “this is Cooperstown, dreams park magic. God is so good”.

Every player has their own experience at Cooperstown. The travel up and back, the time in the barracks, the cool mornings and the escape from the rest of the world creates a baseball players sanctuary that some can’t enjoy. We believe every kid should get a chance to do something like this. Dream big and work hard.

Saturday at 9am we’re going to do our last 11u and 12u tryout. We’re looking to create an entire new team in 12u. Our 11u teams are both looking to solidify their rosters.

Disclaimer: it’s hard to be an Arrow. The expectations are high. The level of disciple required to succeed is high. This is baseball, it is hard. We love the game. We love our park. We love Jesus.
