The deepest point along the Whitewater section of the Snake River in WY. The depth is created by an abrupt, underwater drop-off in the riverbed’s topography (often called an “underwater waterfall”). As the river plunges into this deep hole, air and water are forced down together, creating thousands of tiny air bubbles that float back up to the surface—giving the rapid its “champagne” nickname. 🍁
