Saya John W. Hopper, Jr., of Chillicothe, OH, passed from this life on
Wednesday evening, May 8, 2013 at his residence following an
extended illness.
Born in 1947, Saya Hopper joined the US Air Force in 1965 during the
Vietnam War era. While stationed in South Korea, Saya Hopper
began his martial arts training in Traditional Taekwondo, earning a
2nd dan black belt rank. After returning to the US, Saya Hopper
began training in Bando with notable Bando Masters; Sayaji Randy
Webb, Sayaji Tim Fleming, the late Sayaji Dr. Robert Hill, and the late
Kukri Master Sayaji Ron Meekins.
Saya John Hopper was the Chief Instructor of the Chillicothe Bando
Club and was recognized as a leading expert in the Bando Double
Kukri System. In addition, Saya Hopper trained in the Cobra, Dha,
and Short Stick systems of Bando.
Saya Hopper studied and taught martial arts for over 30 years and
was a student of Mahasayaji Dr. Maung Gyi. While attaining a 4th
level black belt rank in the American Bando Association, Saya
Hopper stayed committed to the Bando Mission with a relentless
dedication.
In the early 80’s, Saya Hopper began organizing and training Bando
Kukri Drill teams. Under the guidance of Mahasayaji Dr. Maung
Gyi, Saya Hopper honored veterans across the US while achieving
the following:
• Officially organized the Chillicothe Memorial Kukri Drill Team
• Received drill team sponsorship from the American Legion Post

America, Circleville, OH (In Memory of Over 58,000 Brothers and
Sisters Who Never Returned From the Vietnam War)
