YMCA OF JACKSON AND WEST TENNESSEE TO CLOSE
Facilities and Programs Ceased Operations on Monday

JACKSON, TENNESSEE (Oct. 7, 2015)—The YMCA of Jackson and West Tennessee announces today that it has ceased all operations, including its facilities in Jackson, Brownsville, and Trenton, and programs offered outside of its facilities, as of Monday, Oct. 5. The YMCA of Jackson and West Tennessee intends to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and dissolve as an organization.

“This is a very difficult time for everyone associated with the YMCA of Jackson and West Tennessee,” said Katie Pace, Chair of the YMCA’s Board of Directors. “Like so many other businesses, charities, and organizations in our area, our YMCA was severely affected during the economic down turn. Declines in membership and donations over the past several years coupled with the addition of increasing maintenance expense for aging facilities have proven too difficult to overcome. In recent years, the board made a number of bold decisions that we expected would strengthen the YMCA, but despite our best efforts, we are not able to generate the financial resources necessary to sustain our operations.”

The YMCA of Jackson and West Tennessee has operated at a financial deficit for several years. Over the past 24 months, the YMCA has reduced staff and streamlined operations in an effort to cut operating expenses, all while maintaining its programs and services for the community. Unfortunately, the YMCA has reached the point where further reductions would prevent operations from continuing.
“Our YMCA has had the privilege of serving the children, families and communities of West Tennessee for 158 years,” Pace said. “We are grateful for the support we have received from our members, participants, volunteers and donors. We deeply regret that closing down will affect so many wonderful people. We also regret not being able to provide more notice. Our board worked until the last possible hour to find a solution to this situation.”

JACKSON YMCA

The YMCA of Jackson and West Tennessee Board of Directors is sad to announce the Jackson YMCA fitness facility, located at 1515 Campbell Street, will close as of August 31, 2015. The YMCA Childcare Center will continue to provide childcare services. The Board of Directors is restructuring the operations of the Jackson YMCA to make the best use of limited resources and allocate those resources to childcare and youth programs.
“We have taken a hard look at what we do best and what needs we can fulfill in the community. There have been many changes in the City of Jackson over the last 10 years and our current model no longer works effectively.” - Katie Pace, Chief Volunteer Officer
As part of the restructuring plan, the Board of Directors is looking at opportunities to reach more families in need of childcare and expanding the current Three-Star childcare program through partnerships. Along with childcare, youth programming is the heart of the YMCA and through partnerships in the community the YMCA will continue programming without walls to assist families and children in Jackson and Madison County.
“This was not an easy decision. The Board has been considering partnerships to keep the branch open, but unfortunately those collaborations could not provide a sustainable model. We feel this decision is the way to move forward and keep the YMCA alive in Jackson, Tennessee.” - Katie Pace
The YMCA still has a strong presence in West Tennessee through the Trenton branch, which is a very active Y community. The Haywood branch is active as a Y without walls through youth programming. YMCA of Jackson and West Tennessee are proud to keep them open for the Y community. The YMCA has been servicing the area since 1857. It is one of the oldest Y’s in the country. The Board of Directors is committed to having the YMCA continue its service to Jackson and Madison County.
Letters have been mailed to the YMCA Jackson membership to explain the closing of the fitness facility.
