Tamiya Pro Spec — Memorial Race Preview
If there is one class at the Gregory Brown Memorial Race that exemplifies what club racing is all about, it is Tamiya Pro Spec. Spec chassis, spec motor, spec tires, and a limited selection of approved bodies — everything equal, everyone on the same page, and nowhere to hide. Twenty-four entries make this one of the largest fields of the day, and the racing will be fierce from the first tone to the last lap.
The Sundays of Summer series has told an interesting story in Pro Spec through two rounds. Brian Cianfrone took the win in Race 1, with Jeff Yatsko right behind him and Brian Kennedy rounding out the podium. Race 2 told a different tale — Marius Akim stepped up to take the top spot with Cianfrone second and Casey McKenna third. Two races, two different winners, and a points picture that remains wide open heading into the summer. The Memorial carries no series points, but the same drivers who have been trading blows all season will be lining up side by side once again.
Marius Akim arrives with momentum and has been in the mix across multiple classes all season — a consistent, calm racer who lets his results do the talking. Brian Cianfrone is never far from the front and has the experience to race smart when it counts. Jones Kim is always a potential winner in any class he enters, though running five classes on Memorial day is an ambitious undertaking — whether the accumulated wheel time helps or hurts by the time Pro Spec runs will be one of the storylines to watch. Jeff Yatsko has been dialing in his Pro Spec setup with some help from his AI corner chief, and the pace gains have been noticeable — he is picking up speed with every race. Brian Kennedy has been a podium presence and won't be giving that up easily. Casey McKenna steps up from B-Main finisher in Race 1 to A-Main podium in Race 2 — that kind of trajectory means he arrives at the Memorial with real confidence.
Jamie Gonzalez is the dark horse of this field. Racing for over twenty years across almost every category imaginable, he brings a wealth of experience and racecraft that can be hard to quantify on a spec class entry list. Don't overlook him. John Incantalupo always shows up with a top fuel fast car — whatever the spec allows, John finds the ceiling, and his setup is never an afterthought. Andrew Bezman continues to build on a promising season and could be in line for a podium if everything comes together.
Simon Wong, last year's Jackson Most Improved Driver, has been quietly building on that recognition. RG Madridejos, Carl Casimir, Harris Kohen, Angelo Koutras, and Kregg Kerr all bring serious experience to the middle of the field. David Lee, who won the Pro Spec B-Main in Race 1, will be looking to make the jump to the A. Al Turner, Mike Rupp, Joe Blanch, Jose Moreira, Pedro Moreira, Andre Sr., and Mario round out a field where depth runs all the way to the back.
Al Venditti makes the trip all the way from South Carolina to compete — a long haul that speaks to what this event means to the community and what this class means to the people who race it.
Twenty-four cars. Equal equipment. No excuses. Pro Spec at the Memorial is going to be settled the old fashioned way — by whoever drives the best five minutes of their day.
