✝️ SCRIPTURE SUNDAY

Colossians 3:23 📖

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

In this passage, Paul is speaking to servants who were tempted to work hard only when their earthly masters were watching. He reminds them that their real concern should not be impressing people, but serving Christ faithfully.

That same principle still matters for us. It is easy to do the right thing when somebody is watching, praising us, or rewarding us. It is harder when nobody notices.

Christians should not need an audience to be faithful. Our effort, honesty, and attitude should come from knowing that even when no one else sees what we are doing, we are still serving the Lord.

ON THE FIELD 🏈

Football gives us plenty of chances to practice that kind of faithfulness.

A player shouldn’t suddenly start hustling because the coach walks over. He shouldn’t only run the drill correctly when he knows someone is watching him.

If you know your assignment, do it right. If you are supposed to block, block. If you are supposed to run the route, run it hard. If you are supposed to encourage a teammate, do it whether anyone notices or not.

Good character is not something you turn on when the coach is looking. It is built by doing what is right even when there is no applause.

OFF THE FIELD 🌎

The same thing is true in everyday life.

Do your schoolwork honestly. Help at home without needing to be reminded. Work hard even when the boss is not standing nearby. Treat people right even when no one else would know if you didn’t.

We should not live for attention, praise, or recognition.

We should be faithful because we belong to Christ.

Do what is right. Give your best. And remember who you are really serving.

THROWBACK THURSDAY 🕰️

Taking it back to our 2025 Team Day Water Gun Fight!

The kids thought we were just lining everybody up for a group picture… little did they know Coach Deaton and Coach Childress were sneaking up behind them with buckets of water. 😂

This program has always been about more than practices and games for us. Some of the best memories come from days like this, when the kids can just have fun together and enjoy being a team.

✝️ SCRIPTURE SUNDAY

Proverbs 16:32 📖

“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.”

The world often mistakes an angry man for a strong man. But Scripture teaches us that real strength is being able to control yourself when you have every opportunity to lose control.

Anyone can react when they are angry. It takes discipline to stop, think, and choose the right response. Self-control doesn’t mean we never get frustrated or upset. It means those emotions don’t get to make our decisions for us.

A strong person isn’t simply someone who can overpower somebody else. A strong person can control himself.

ON THE FIELD 🏈

Football gives us plenty of chances to practice self-control.

A referee makes a call you disagree with. An opponent says something to insult you. Somebody blocks you harder than you think is necessary. You make a mistake and get frustrated with yourself.

You can lose your temper — or you can get back in position and play the next snap. One angry reaction can turn into a penalty and hurt your entire team. Good players learn that toughness isn’t losing control. Toughness is staying under control when things don’t go your way.

OFF THE FIELD 🌎

Football won’t be the last place where somebody makes you angry. There will be disagreements with family, classmates, coworkers, and friends.

You can’t control everything that other people say or do. But with God’s help, you can learn to control your response. Don’t let somebody else’s behavior decide yours. Stay calm. Think before you react. And remember that self-control is a form of strength.

🕰️ THROWBACK THURSDAY 🕰️

Going all the way back to May 2023, during our very first year — back when the program was still called “Malesus Spring Training.” This photo was taken during one of our scrimmages.

Creedan Roe runs with the football, while Link Espitia reaches for his flag. Peyton Deaton and Eli Webb are coming up behind the play preparing to block, while Squirrel Curry and Levi Cotton are in pursuit. Coach Tyler Deaton is watching from the background.

It’s hard to believe this was the beginning of what would eventually become South Jackson Football Camp. Just a group of kids learning football and having fun together.

✝️ SCRIPTURE SUNDAY

1 Corinthians 12:21 📖

“The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’”

God did not design us to do everything alone. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul compares believers to the different parts of one body. Each part has a different job, but every part is needed.

Some people may be noticed more than others and some roles may seem more important. Scripture reminds us that being noticed does not determine your value, though.

God gives different people different abilities, responsibilities, and opportunities. We are stronger when we stop worrying about who gets the credit and learn to use what God has given us to serve alongside others. Nobody has to do everything, but everybody has something to contribute.

ON THE FIELD 🏈

Football makes this lesson easy for us to see. The player carrying the football may get the touchdown, but he didn’t get there alone.

Someone snapped the ball. Someone made a block. Someone carried out a fake. A receiver may run an entire route without ever touching the football and still help create the play.

Every assignment matters, even if every assignment doesn’t receive applause. A good football team works when players stop asking, “Am I getting the ball?” and start asking, “Am I doing my job?”

OFF THE FIELD 🌎

The same is true away from football. Families need people who help one another. Churches need people willing to serve. Schools, workplaces, and communities depend on people doing different jobs for a common purpose.

You won’t always be the person everyone notices. That doesn’t mean what you do is unimportant. Do your part. Help the people beside you. And remember — we were never meant to do life alone.

In honor of tonight being the first Friday night of high school football, here are a couple of clips that caught some of our SJFC players enjoying last year’s South Side vs. North Side game — throwing the football around behind the end zone at halftime and watching the game with their families and coaches.

The Hawks open the 2026 season at home tonight against Milan at 7:00 PM.

If you’re looking for something to do tonight, come out and support the players representing our South Jackson community under the Friday night lights.

Maybe some of the young players sitting in those stands today will be the ones wearing a South Side jersey a few years from now!
