Weather was hot and humid with temps in high 80s to around 90 by conclusion of match. Winds were light and variable.

Seven competitors in first chunk match in Kentucky in 5 years. 4 states represented (KY, OH, IN, and WV)

This was a "Spiderless" match. There were no true spiders..

Range is ready for Kentucky Chunk Match tomorrow, August 16, 2025. Due to extreme heat tomorrow, canopies will be allowed if you have one to shoot under. The covered porch will be used for loading and is more cool as well. Look forward to seeing everyone. Gates open at 830 am.

Kentucky Chunk Match August 16, 2025.

LOCATION: Smokie Drive, Jackson, KY
GATES OPEN: 8:30 am
COMPETITOR SAFETY MEETING: 10:15 am (Please be set up by this time.)
PRACTICE ROUNDS: 10:30 am
START OF MATCH: 11:00 am
COST: $25

A light meal will be provided by club after match. Hearing that it will be pulled pork BBQ and some sides.

We have prizes below in conjunction with 70% payout.

Do not leave vehicle in front of clubhouse. You may unload but all will need to be moved to sides before safety meeting. There is ample parking.

Canopies allowed.

Smokie Drive is an Appalachian county owned narrow, gravel road off of Airport Road.

Any traditional blackpowder firearm is allowed. You must bring your own "chunk" in order to rest your rifle while shooting in prone position.

Bring your own loading table. The club does have one table to accommodate new shooters that do not have one. It will accommodate four to five competitors.

Bring your own target holder.

Clubhouse has indoor restrooms with running water..

Stay hydrated. Forecast is typical hot and humid August weather.

Directions to Kentucky Chunk Match.

Smokie Drive, Jackson, KY. It is a dead end road ending at clubhouse. From Jackson, take KY 15 to KY 30. Go about 5 miles towards Salyersville on KY 30. Turn left onto road that goes to Jackson Airport. There are signs for it, the National Weather Service, and Boone's Trace Muzzleloaders. Go about a tenth of a mile up steep hill. Turn left onto Smokie Drive. There will be a sign for Breathitt Game and Fish and Boone's Trace Muzzleloaders. Follow Smokie Drive until it ends at clubhouse.

We have had an additional prize donated for the Kentucky Chunk Match on August 16, 2025. This cool little historically- inspired compass/sundial combo was donated by club member Charles Chalk. This will be the prize given for best X. Come on out and join us next Saturday. Match begins at 11:00 am. Practice rounds start at 10:30 am. Gate opens at 8:30 am. Cost is $25. UPDATE REGARDING CAMPING for Kentucky Chunk Match. Due to some circumstances beyond our control, the range will not be open for camping the night before match (August 15). The match will still be held on August 16, 2025. We apologize if you'd planned on staying at the range overnight.

Gate will open at the range at 830 am on Saturday, August 16. This is two hours before practice rounds begin and should give everyone ample time to get set up.

MORE INFORMATION REGARDING AUGUST 16 KENTUCKY CHUNK MATCH. PLEASE RESPOND IN COMMENTS, SEND A PRIVATE MESSAGE TO CLUB, OR TO STEVEN L. BOWEN if you plan on camping the night before (August 15).

1. We will open the range at 4 pm on August 15, 2025, for camping. If you'd like to come a little earlier, please let us know.
2. Tents, small campers, or camping in truck or vehicle are allowed. RV's, or large campers would be extremely difficult to navigate very narrow, curvy roads leading to the range.
3. There are no RV hookups available. The clubhouse does have running water and public, indoor toilets.
4. No ice, firewood, etc., will be provided. Bring your own please.
5. Please, DO NOT park directly in front of clubhouse. Park off to the sides. Loading tables will be placed on covered porch of clubhouse. Porch may be used to shoot from if it rains. Bring a good shooting mat and padding if you need it just in case as it is concrete slab. Padding underneath mat is allowed, but cannot be used as additional support for your gun.

Note that there are motels in the area as well as two state parks (Natural Bridge and Buckhorn Lake) approximately one hour away from range for lodging. Also, the Red River Gorge area approximately one hour away has numerous cabins, bed and breakfasts, etc. for lodging.

The match will start at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 16, 2025. Practice rounds will begin at 10:30 am. You may set up your target boards, loading stands, etc. on Saturday morning at any time.

You will need to bring your own target board. None will be provided. Also, bring your own loading table. The club does have one that can be used for new shooters that do not currently have a table.

Canopies are allowed.

Boone's Trace is happy to provide a range for this match. It's been a long time since a chunk match has been held in Kentucky. This is our first year doing this. Therefore, some things may be overlooked. If you have a question, please ask and we will do our best to answer and accommodate. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you.

The Kentucky Chunk Match is fast approaching on August 16th. We have had another prize donated. This is a range rod made by Roger Ruth "Buck". I have one range rod made by Buck I won at another match. This will be a 3rd place prize or for best X. We haven't decided. Reminder, 70% payouts. More specific details regarding everything about the match will be posted in the next week or so. Make plans now to attend.

Reminder that the Kentucky Chunk Match is still scheduled for August 16, 2025. Boone's Trace Muzzleloaders is excited to host this over-the-log match. In addition to 70% payouts, Boone's Trace Muzzleloaders will award the 1st place aggregate winner a handmade "Beaver Bill" long knife as well as a nice cap donated by Patriot Realty and Auction of Columbia, KY. Thank you Ken Hill for this wonderful donation. Second place aggregate will receive a knife donated by Steve Bowen which was made by Donald Brown of Nortonville, KY. Third place is yet to be determined. Practice rounds start at 10:30 am with match starting at 11 am. Cost is $25. A light meal will be provided by the club after the match. Unfortunately, the woodswalk scheduled for tomorrow is CANCELLED. Weather forecasts include rain and thunderstorms for tomorrow. Also, heavy rain is scheduled for this evening and tonight and ground will be soggy. We apologize for the inconvenience. Our next scheduled event will be Kentucky Chunk match in August. Other events will be advertised here as well.
