In Maine, a drive through “Moose Alley” makes for one of the state’s most stunning scenic drives…with the added benefit of the chance to see moose…hence the name! This wild and beautiful stretch follows U.S. Route 201 through the Kennebec Valley, along the same corridor known as the Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway.

The official byway runs about 78 miles from Solon to the Canadian border, winding past the Kennebec River, Wyman Lake, the Dead River, thick forest, quiet pull-offs, and small outdoor towns like The Forks and Jackman. Long before it became a road trip route, this area followed old river travel paths used by the Abenaki, linking inland Maine with routes toward Quebec. Today, it is one of the best places in Maine to watch for moose, especially around marshy areas, ponds, and roadside wetlands where they often feed.

You may spot one standing in the shallows, stepping out near the trees, or grazing close to the road, but the scenery alone makes the drive worth taking even if the moose stay hidden. The Forks is also one of Maine’s best-known whitewater rafting hubs, thanks to its location near the Kennebec and Dead Rivers, while Jackman brings a true North Woods feel with mountains, lakes, cabins, and miles of outdoor country all around it. With winding pavement, river views, forested hills, wildlife, and a real sense of remote Maine, Moose Alley is the kind of drive that feels peaceful, wild, and unforgettable from start to finish.
