Let's talk about good sparring vs. bad sparring.
Good sparring is something everyone can learn from. It's not about winning or losing, it's about growing. You let your sparring partner "know" about holes in their game, with the goal to help them fix it. With good sparring, you're not hitting with maximum force - you can still use your speed, just not full power. With good sparring, everyone comes back healthy and learning. Clashes and injuries do happen, but nothing is done with hurting intent. Even hard sparring, which should be done sparingly getting ready for fights, has a mission of improvement and preparedness. At the end of good sparring, everyone can come together and lift each other's hands up.
Bad sparring is when someone is out to hurt or dominate. Bad sparring is where bullies thrive. Bad sparring is full of big egos, brain damage, and hurt people.
I will always offer good sparring opportunities during Sunday Open Martial Arts sessions at Southside Community Center, Inc. and am grateful to my training partners!
