A child who is comfortable in the water but lacks capacity is the most dangerous one out there. We want them to know what to do if they find themselves in the water on purpose or accidentally. Let’s give them real skills they can use for fun too!

Your child doesn’t necessarily need to know all four competition strokes* but we owe it to children to get them to a truly safe level of water competency and the earlier the better!!

*but why wouldn’t you want them to? 😄 Swimming is a lifelong sport that can be done well past when most of us will stop doing other things due to injuries etc. It doesn’t require collecting a team of people like other sports and it uses all the body’s muscles! I could go on…

This happened in our backyard, Ithaca. We often see this kind of story farther south and with younger children, but this is your reminder that no matter the age or ability (I assume he was a known non swimmer but it can happen to anyone), to make sure you and your children are competent swimmers and that YOU are watching them! Lifeguards have up to 25 people in their areas. Treat them as backup.

Florida has over 400 drownings per year and leads the US in pediatric drownings. I tried last year to find stats about how many of those include vacationers but that statistic isn’t available. This is not the first instance I’ve seen THIS MONTH of kids traveling and drowning. Every year someone tells me, “I don’t live on a lake and none of my family has a pool. We’ll be okay waiting a year.” I really hope so. But if you don’t want to take that chance, let me know.
