At 8:30 AM this morning the Islip Fire Department was alerted to a reported residential structure fire at 87 Grant Avenue after neighbors spotted smoke coming from the roof of the home. First to arrive was Assistant Chief Farrell who confirmed smoke showing and located fire in the attic of a 1 story set back in the rear transmitting the working fire. Islip crews quickly located and extinguished the fire stopping it from extending outside of the attic space. Mutual aid was provided by the and the

*UPDATE* After 6+ hours operating all Islip units are back in town after being released by Central Islip FD command.

At around 2:40 PM the Islip FD was alerted on a mutual aid to the for a working commercial structure fire in a row of stores on E Suffolk Ave between Wheeler Rd and Church St. Numerous businesses were involved in this fast moving fire. The Islip FD responded with Tower Ladder 3-4-11, Fire Police Unit 3-4-8, and Chiefs 3-4-30 & 3-4-32. Our crews continue to operate at the scene continuing to work to get this fire extinguished. The Islip Fire Department  along with dozens of departments from the area have been operating for over four hours at a multi alarm fire on East Suffolk Avenue in Central Islip near Wheeler Road. Our crews are expected to continue to operate for a prolonged period at this fire. 

Our department is always at the ready to help our neighbors when called upon, and we have insured proper staffing of our district during this incident.

Just before 7:00 PM yesterday the Islip Fire Department responded alongside the Exchange Ambulance of the Islips for a motorcycle motor vehicle accident on South Bay Ave and Raymond Street. The motorcycle rider suffered serious injuries and was taken to South Shore University Hospital by the Islip FD Rescue Squad. There were no other injuries.

Authorities say the driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe was heading eastbound on Raymond Street and stopped at stop sign at the intersection of South Bay Avenue.

Yesterday morning at approximately 7:20 AM the Islip Fire Department responded to a report of an outside fire to the rear of Kohls 2040 Sunrise Highway. Units arrived to find a rubbish fire in the parking lot as a roll off truck driver discovered that his load was on fire and dumped the load. Engines 3-4-7, 3-4-1 and 3-4-9 responded under the command of chief 3-4-31 and extinguished the fire.

At 5:07 PM the Islip Fire Department responded on a mutual aid to the Brentwood Fire Department for a working residential structure fire at 25 Bruce Lane for 1 engine to respond to the scene. Engine 3-4-9 along with chiefs 3-4-30 & 3-4-32 responded and arrived as the second due engine to a single story home with heavy fire in the basement and first floor. The first arriving Brentwood engine company stretched a primary attack line to the basement while engine 3-4-9 stretched the secondary line to knock down an exterior fire on the 2/3 corner and then redeployed to the fire on the first floor. Islip members operated for over an hour and a half on the scene until being released by Brentwood command.

I was honored to recognize Benjamin Galletto, a 70-year member of the Islip Fire Department. Benjamin joined the Islip Fire Department on May 1, 1956, with a singular purpose—to serve and protect his community. Over the course of seven decades, he has exemplified unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to public service. His career began in Fire Police Company #1, where his strong work ethic and natural leadership abilities quickly became evident. He rose through the ranks, serving as an officer and later being elected Assistant Chief, a role he held for four years before being elected Chief of Department from 1972 to 1974. Following his tenure as Chief, Benjamin continued to serve the department in numerous capacities, including as a member of Engine Company 2 and as Company Secretary. He also played a vital role in mentoring the next generation as a director of the Junior Fire Department program, helping to prepare young community members for future service. In 1976, he was elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners, serving with distinction for 35 years until 2011. His leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the department into what it is today.
