At 5:07 PM the Islip Fire Department responded on a mutual aid to the Brentwood Fire Department for a working residential structure fire at 25 Bruce Lane for 1 engine to respond to the scene. Engine 3-4-9 along with chiefs 3-4-30 & 3-4-32 responded and arrived as the second due engine to a single story home with heavy fire in the basement and first floor. The first arriving Brentwood engine company stretched a primary attack line to the basement while engine 3-4-9 stretched the secondary line to knock down an exterior fire on the 2/3 corner and then redeployed to the fire on the first floor. Islip members operated for over an hour and a half on the scene until being released by Brentwood command.

I was honored to recognize Benjamin Galletto, a 70-year member of the Islip Fire Department. Benjamin joined the Islip Fire Department on May 1, 1956, with a singular purpose—to serve and protect his community. Over the course of seven decades, he has exemplified unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to public service. His career began in Fire Police Company #1, where his strong work ethic and natural leadership abilities quickly became evident. He rose through the ranks, serving as an officer and later being elected Assistant Chief, a role he held for four years before being elected Chief of Department from 1972 to 1974. Following his tenure as Chief, Benjamin continued to serve the department in numerous capacities, including as a member of Engine Company 2 and as Company Secretary. He also played a vital role in mentoring the next generation as a director of the Junior Fire Department program, helping to prepare young community members for future service. In 1976, he was elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners, serving with distinction for 35 years until 2011. His leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the department into what it is today.

Today at the Islip Memorial Day Parade the Islip Fire Department unveiled our 1936 Ford 1.5 ton Utility Light Truck initially serving as Patrol Truck 3-4-4 that the Islip Fire District was recently able to re-acquire from a private collector in Pennsylvania. It came to the attention of the department that our very own antique piece of apparatus was available for purchase and the Board of Fire Commissioners as well as the department ensured we could return her back home where she belonged.

Today in the annual Memorial Day parade this piece of apparatus proudly returned to the streets of Islip. To make this occasion even more momentous and memorable today sitting atop this beautiful rig was Ex-Chief, and 70-year member Benjamin Galletto who had the pleasure of driving and riding in this vehicle when it saw service many many years ago.

A little rain couldn’t stop the community of Islip from honoring our fallen service men and women today for Memorial Day. Today the Chiefs of the Islip Fire Department began the day by laying wreaths at all of the military memorials and monuments throughout the district. Immediately following the department conducted our annual Memorial Day services at fire headquarters.

As Chief of Department Macchio led our services he reminded all of what today is truly about, saying - “To many, this weekend is the unofficial start of summer. We see the advertisements for sales and the smoke rising from the backyard bar-be-ques. There is no shame in enjoying these things, the freedom to gather in peace with our families and friends is exactly what our fallen heroes fought to protect. However, we must ensure the festivities do not overshadow the foundation. A BBQ is a celebration of the life we have, Memorial Day is a solemn recognition of the price paid for it. We are here to remember that our liberty was not a gift- it was a purchase made by those who gave their last full measure of devotion to our Country and all of us”.

After the completion of our services the department marched in the annual Islip Memorial Day Parade sponsored by The American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411. We thank all who came out today despite the weather to pay tribute along side of us.
