There’s a difference between attending a fitness class and being coached by people who actually know you.

At GRITT in Islip, NY, our coaches know your movement history, your abilities, your goals and what your body needs on any given day. That’s the advantage of semi-private training: you still get the energy and community of working alongside others, but you’re never just another person in the room. Whether you’re here for Reformer/Mat Pilates, functional strength training, or simply to move better and feel stronger, your coaching should evolve with you.

Watch what happens when we change ONE thing.

Same bridge. Same person. Different setup.

When someone experiences lower back pain during a bridge, the answer isn’t always to remove the exercise. Sometimes, a purposeful change in position, setup, cueing, or load can completely change how the movement feels and looks. Once we found the bridge variation that worked for her body, we could progress it eventually adding a single-leg march while maintaining control. This is what individualized coaching looks like at GRITT in Islip, NY.

We don’t expect every body to perform an exercise the exact same way. We modify the movement to meet the person in front of us and progress from there. Small change. Better movement. Bigger possibilities.

A plank isn’t just about how long you can hold it. Can you maintain tension while still breathing? Can you keep your ribs connected, your pelvis controlled, and your shoulders stable without holding your breath or losing your position? That’s where a plank gets interesting.

You thought you were doing just fine… and then your instructor walks over 😂

“Connect to your breath.”
“Square your hips.”
“Ribs in.”
“Slow it down.”
“Now hold it.”

And somehow the exact same exercise just got 10x harder. ✨
Because sometimes it’s not about adding more resistance or making the exercise look more advanced. It’s about better alignment, more control, and actually connecting to what your body is doing. If you know, you know 💀

A plank can tell us a whole lot more than how strong your “core” is. When we coach planks at GRITT, we’re watching what happens through your shoulders, rib cage, spine and pelvis as your body works against gravity.

Hips dropping? We’re looking at lumbopelvic control and your ability to resist extension.

B***y shooting up? Your body may be shortening the lever to reduce the demand on your core and in a high plank, shifting your weight back can also unload the shoulders.

Chest sinking or shoulder blades losing control in a high plank? Now we’re paying attention to scapular stability, including how effectively the serratus anterior, rotator cuff and surrounding shoulder musculature are doing their jobs. Holding a position and controlling a position are two very different things. That’s the difference between simply being given an exercise and actually being coached through movement.

At GRITT in Islip, NY, our semi-private Pilates and strength training is built around understanding HOW you move, not just counting your reps.

Most people think a challenging Pilates class is about shaking muscles or leaving exhausted. It’s not.

At GRITT, we believe the hardest part of movement isn’t always lifting heavier or doing more reps. Sometimes it’s asking your body to move with precision.

Today’s challenge wasn’t about making the exercise harder.
It was about coordinating movement, maintaining proper alignment, controlling balance, activating the transverse abdominis and other deep core stabilizers, and teaching the nervous system to move more efficiently.

That’s how you build a body that’s stronger not just today, but for years to come. Whether someone walks into our studio recovering from an injury, looking to improve athletic performance, or simply wanting to move better in everyday life, the foundation is the same:

1) Quality movement before quantity.
2) Stability before intensity.
3) Control before speed.

Strength isn’t just about how much force you can produce. It’s about how well you can control it.

If you’re looking for semi-private Reformer Pilates in Islip, where every movement is coached and every class is designed to improve balance, coordination, core stability, and long-term movement quality, we’d love to meet you.

🤍 COMMUNITY CALL

This month, we’re partnering with to support an elderly couple who have spent years caring for a colony of stray cats out of their own pockets. After experiencing financial hardship, they could use our help.

From now until the end of the month, we’re collecting:
🐾 Dry cat food
🐾 Wet cat food
🎁 gift cards

📍Donations can be dropped off at GRITT or directly at Tula Kitchen.

Let’s come together and show what community looks like, one bag of food, one can, one gift card, one act of kindness at a time. 🤍

A special thank you to for bringing this need to our attention and for being the driving force behind this effort. We’re simply honored to come alongside her and help support such a meaningful cause.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Pilates is that it’s just another workout.

It isn’t.
The Pilates method is an education in how your body moves.
That’s why we spend so much time teaching concepts like 3D breathing, rib cage placement, imprint, and neutral spine. These aren’t just cues to get through an exercise, they’re principles that help you better understand your body.

When you learn to breathe with purpose and in connection to the movement, organize your rib cage, and understand when to use imprint versus neutral, something begins to change.

You stop rushing through movement.
You become more aware.
You begin connecting your mind to your body.
And that’s why a well-taught Pilates session often feels so different. It’s not just that your muscles worked; it’s that your nervous system was paying attention.

Joseph Pilates believed that mindful movement could improve the way we move, stand, breathe, and live. More than 100 years later, those principles are still the foundation of the method. At GRITT, we don’t just teach exercises.

We teach you how to understand your body because that understanding is what creates movement that lasts long after class is over.
