Walked our second day of the coastal Portuguese Camino, from Labruge to Póvoa de Varzim. We did 25km yesterday, which was a bit much so we dialed it back to only 15km today. We need to average around 25km per day so we are going to gradually increase our distances.

We saw a lot of beautiful coastal areas today, mostly small towns along the way. It was cool and windy and the waves were constant along the rugged coast. There were a lot of pilgrims walking early in the day but less later on for some reason. Tonight we are treating ourselves to a nice hotel room after the spartan hut experience of the albergue last night.

Tomorrow we keep heading along the coast and plan to stop in Marinhas 24km north. But first we will enjoy a nice dinner tonight.

Bom Caminho!

Susan and I are super excited to be getting our pilgrimage underway soon. This is a bucket list item for Susan and we are celebrating her big birthday along the route. We will be walking the coastal route of the Camino de Santiago from Porto, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This is a popular route for many who want to do the Camino walk. The total distance is 265 kilometers, and we are planning on completing it in 13-14 days, or about 20 km a day average. We will be carrying all our belongings with us and staying mostly in albergues in small towns that cater to pilgrims.

We are looking forward to spending precious time with each other, marveling at the beauty of a new land, meeting interesting people from all around the world and exploring new cuisine. We will most assuredly build amazing memories.

Why do people walk the Camino? Some do it for spiritual reasons, others do it to reset their lives, and others for the challenge. I’m doing it in support of my wife and to embrace a new travel experience. I’m sure I will return a changed person.

Buen camino!
