You’ve probably heard the name Jack Strand this week.

What you may not know about the Atlanta Falcons quarterback is that while becoming a 4x All-NSIC performer, 2x NSIC Offensive Player of the Year and 2026 Campbell Trophy finalist at
MSUM Dragon Football, he was also studying engineering physics and pursuing a dream he has had since childhood: helping send people into space.

This season, 2,687 college football players across 288 schools are competing with undergraduate degrees already earned, including 73 players nominated for the William V. Campbell Trophy in 2025 or 2026.

Some earned their degrees early. Others are pursuing advanced degrees while continuing their football careers. All have reached an academic milestone that will serve them long after their final game.

We are proud to celebrate these graduates and the opportunities football creates to pursue an education.

Texas claimed 33 of 56 first-place votes to take the No. 1 spot for the first time since the 2025 preseason poll, following a 24-23 win over previously top-ranked Ohio State.

Georgia jumped two spots to No. 2 after a 50-point rout of Western Kentucky, marking the first time since September 29, 2024 that SEC teams held both of the poll's top two slots.

Notre Dame and Miami took Nos. 3 and 4 after decisive home wins in Week 2.

Ohio State dropped five spots to No. 6 following the loss in Austin — its lowest ranking since claiming the No. 7 ranking on December 1, 2024. The Buckeyes held the poll's top spot in 16 of the previous 17 weeks.

Oregon, which ranked No. 7 last week, fell nine spots to No. 16 after a 39-31 loss at Oklahoma State. Oklahoma dropped out of the poll entirely following a 10-17 loss at Michigan and was replaced by Tennessee, which moved up to No. 14 after a 45-24 victory at Georgia Tech.

The National Football Foundation mourns the passing of 2017 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Bob McKay, a consensus All-America offensive tackle who helped lead Texas to a perfect 11-0 season and the 1969 national championship.

A stalwart on the offensive line, McKay helped pave the way for the Longhorns’ famed Wishbone attack and was part of two Southwest Conference championship teams.

“Bob was a gentle giant and simply one of those people you loved being around,” said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. “More than a great football player, Bob was a great person and a good friend.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Donna, the entire McKay family and the Texas community.

Bob McKay, a 2017 NFF College Football Hall of Fame inductee and an All-America offensive tackle for the Longhorns from 1968-69, passed away Sept. 10 in Austin, Texas. He was 78.

College football keeps growing.

Ten new or reinstated four-year programs are taking the field in 2026, the largest group since 2013, bringing the nationwide total to 778 schools.

The preseason Super 16 went a combined 16-0 in Week 1. Ohio State remained No. 1 with a 56-3 victory over Ball State in Columbus, marking the 16th consecutive week a Big Ten member claimed the top spot in the poll.

Texas moved up one spot to No. 3 after a dominant 52-point win at home against Texas State.

Notre Dame, Miami (FL), Ole Miss and LSU are the only ranked teams to claim wins over opponents from an Autonomous Four conference in Week 1. The Fighting Irish advanced one spot to No. 2 after defeating Wisconsin 41-13 at Lambeau Field.

The Hurricanes moved up two spots to No. 5 after a 45-6 conference victory at Stanford. Ole Miss fell one spot to No. 9 after defeating Louisville 41-38 in Nashville, while LSU leaped four slots to No. 8 after a decisive 51-10 win at home against Clemson.

Oregon slipped five spots to No. 7 after a narrow 34-27 victory over Boise State at home.

Michigan, last week's No. 16 team, fell out of the poll despite a 13-12 win at home against Western Michigan. Penn State moved into the poll to claim the No. 16 ranking.

The SEC leads all conferences with seven teams followed by the Big Ten with five, the Big 12 with two, the ACC with one and the FBS Independents with one.
