2. Knockdown PW

Knockdown PW:
1. Move the ball 1-2 inches back from normal.
2. Grip down slightly and stand slightly closer.

Hitting in the heel? Shanking? Try this water bottle drill! Sometimes all you need is a little motivation (don't hit the bottle) to fine tune your contact.

PRO TIP: Don't sit the bottle too far outside the edge of the club. No more than 1/4 inch. Otherwise, you can make heel contact and not get the feedback for the bottle.

Not making enough swing will result in the ball ending up in the very spot we were trying to avoid—like a bunker or a grassy hill before the green. You have to commit to making enough swing with lofted clubs!

Additionally, you must commit to hitting the ground. If you make enough swing but don’t hit the ground, the ball will sail over the back of the green—and there's nothing good over the back of the green!

Is your miss typically on the heel or toe? If you don't know, try this to find out. If your answer is "all over the place," use this to get feedback and eliminate one type of miss. Knowing where you're making contact is the first step toward improving it.

Do you practice with long irons?

If the longest iron you use in practice is a 7-iron, you'll get better at hitting it. Your 8-iron and 9-iron will also become easier to hit than your 7-iron. But when you go to use your 6-iron on the course, it will feel challenging because you haven't practiced with it. The 5-iron will seem even harder, and longer irons will be tougher still.

However, if you practice, even just a little, with a longer iron like a 5-iron, your 7-iron will feel much easier to hit. Your short irons, like the 8 and 9, will seem almost too easy!

If you use hybrids, having a long iron just for practice is still a good idea. Use it in practice, not play, and your iron game will improve significantly!
