Johan Cruyff: “Before Age 10, Let Them Fall in Love With the Ball.”
Johan Cruyff always said that before the age of ten, one thing matters more than anything else: Let children fall in love with the ball.
At this age, don’t rush tactics.
Don’t obsess over winning.
Don’t compare one child to another.
Cruyff believed the most gifted kids would naturally play more - because they enjoy the game more.
And you should never take that enjoyment away.
Instead:
• Let them get familiar with the ball
• Encourage the shy ones to dribble more
• Gently slow down the ones who dribble too much
• Help them learn to play together, step by step
• Educate without comparing — each child develops at their own rhythm
For Cruyff, youth football was not about producing champions.
It was about shaping confident, joyful, expressive players who love the game deeply.
Because if you protect joy, confidence and curiosity in these early years… the footballer will emerge on their own.
