Despite this being our first match of the season having everyone available (minus Julia of course), we knew it would still be a challenge given the lack of fitness for returning players and time to build chemistry, coupled with the fact we were up against the juggernaut that is San Marcos Revolution.

Still we controlled most of the game, especially in the first half after scoring a goal in the first two minutes (corner kick from Savannah, to a flick from Jessie, to the goal from Reiss). Despite maintaining 60% possession and completing 119 more passes, with a team as good as Revolution it always comes down to which team is going to do a better job limiting mistakes. Unfortunately for us on this day, we made two critical mistakes in the second half and ultimately dropped the match 1-2.

We knew the first half of the season would be a challenge given our injury woes, but dropping 7 points in the last three weeks has been brutal to say the least. We are working our way back to full health/fitness now though so the second of half league looks promising. We’ll need to go on a run and get some help if we are going to crack the top half or third of the table.

Up next is a match against our dear friends from United LA. I’m bummed I won’t be able to attend as I’ll be in Chicago but I’ll be watching live thanks to Mark Narmore. Best of luck to Rudolph and his team!

3:00 PM matches on a Sunday are not ideal, but fortunately this was our only late game of the season and it was close to home (Ventura College).

Kickers is a team I’ve enjoyed playing against throughout the years. A very well coached and disciplined team with talented players at every position. Traditionally they have been one of the few teams who have been able to possess and move the ball at or near what we typically strive to do. As expected, they did just that again by keeping us to 55% possession and making this out to be a battle of the midfield.

After conceding a direct free kick goal, which was actually a volley off of a perfect cross from the set piece, Emily tied it for us with a phenomenal individual effort. For the second weekend in a row we were able to salvage a point in a game we deserved three, thanks to the heroics of this young lady in addition to a couple huge last minute saves by our goalkeeper Kendall.

Next week we match up against San Marcos Revolution. A team very similar to Kickers in regards to the respect we have for their staff and players and how they play the game.

One of two matches we’ll play that isn’t at the standard Coast Soccer League Premier League OC Great Park. Can’t say I missed the Kern County Soccer Park, especially with it being a pseudo home game for a quality South Valley team. Good news though is that Reiss was back after severely spraining her ankle just two weeks ago. There is not a tougher ‘04 girl than her, or one as capable of playing through as much pain and injury.

We came into this match wanting to be more attack minded than last weekend, and for the majority of the game we executed as such. We out-shot, out-passed, out-possessed and imposed our will to the tune of 4 corner kicks (to 0) and forcing 7 clearances.

Unfortunately our shots weren’t falling and eventually the always dangerous South Valley was able to score on a counter attack. Fortunately we responded and were able to secure the result in the end off an Emily goal assisted by Reiss (hockey assist for Kaelin from the direct free kick).

Though we were still missing three players, and Kaelin (broken finger), Laurel (shin splints), Kendall (ankle) and Reiss (ankle) were playing through major injuries, it felt like a turning point for us. So proud and impressed with the effort, sacrifice, and desire each of the girls showed.

The next two weekends are critical, and if we could secure between 4-6 points we’ll be in a great spot. Our goal is to secure as many results as possible in the first month before making a run in the second half of the season when we are closer to full strength.

On a side note, with this result we became the first team in Futbol Foundation of Santa Clarita history to register a point in the Premier League. Thanks for pointing that out Frank, pretty cool stuff.

We kicked off the Coast Soccer League Premier League campaign devastated by injury with Julia and Addison out indefinitely, Reiss on the “14 Day IR”, and Raffi “Day-to-Day”. To add salt to wound Italia went down within the first 5 minutes of the match too.

Fortunately via Club Pass we were able to bring two loan players from our club to help us out. Hailey Rodin and Caitlyn Leao from the team coached by Fernando Mahaluf gave us a much needed 66 minutes, coupled with Raffi chipping in 32. All three put in more minutes than expected due to the circumstances, yet it was all quality to their credit.

We played a bit more defensive than usual, aiming frankly to survive and come away with at least a one point result. Things were looking good in that regard, until the 72nd minute when we conceded a goal via a very strong individual effort.

Not the way we envisioned starting the Fall 2019 campaign but all things considered I was proud of our teams resiliency. I’m looking forward to this season, fully expecting it to be a roller coaster of emotions and results for all teams.

Lastly, it was so good seeing so many other high quality teams playing at this highest level in CSL all at one location. Many we have known and competed against for years (CC Aztecs AV, South Valley Thunder, San Marcos Revolution, AYSO United Los Angeles, and Kickers Soccer Club) and others we are excited to play for the first time (San Diego Strikers, San Diego Real Madrid, Santa Monica United, and BYSC Corona United). Congratulations to each of the girls who made the 2019/2020 Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Frosh soccer teams at Valencia High School.

To those specifically on the JV team, cheers! I am very excited for the opportunity to coach each of you (some of you again). This upcoming year will be my second campaign at VHS (after a VERY special first one), so I’m anticipating new challenges ahead but I’m looking forward to facing them together.

I want to thank you all for participating in the program. I appreciate your hard work and dedication. I promise to bring the same level of work and commitment to our team.

Finally, I promise to do my best by each of you, as I know each of you will do for each other and the team. We have a chance to do something special here (again), so let’s get after it.

PS: I’m so happy, excited, and proud of each of the girls who played JV last year and were selected for Varsity this year. To the girls on my G04 club team (Alyssa, Gisselle, Italia, and Laurel) and to those who I was fortunate enough to coach at least once (Alissa, Danielle, Emily, Grace, Jackie, and Kaity), best of luck!

I am pleased to announce my girls 2004 team has been promoted to Premier in the Coast Soccer League (CSL)!

The last year has been the best and most fun time our team has ever had together. The continued growth, the comradery, and the success we have found on and off the field has been wonderful. It took 6 years to get here, but this group of young ladies and parents made it all worth it.

Additionally this past year was a special one in that 12 of our 15 girls played their first year in High School. 1 Varsity, 8 JV, and 3 Frosh with 1 of the JV and 1 of the Frosh getting pulled up to Varsity (a second Frosh to JV too). The 7 Valencia and 2 Saugus players were Foothill League champs for JV and Frosh respectively. Lastly, three of our players were selected to compete for national team considerations, one for USA ODP/Pro+ and two for El Salvador.

Bring on the 2019/2020 PREMIER season!

PS: Congratulations to our very own Kevin Durkin on his girls 2002 team making Premier as well. We are the first and only two teams from FFSC to play at this level thus far in the clubs history, and Kevin is the common denominator.

This weekend marked the end of our 2018/2019 campaign. More detail on that later, but for now I have to say I am so incredibly proud of this team.

As their coach, I ask them for so much. From competing at every practice, to being mentally engaged at every game, to excelling in school, to being good to each other, etc. It’s a lot, and then I ask them to double down and give even more.

We were down 4-6 players at any given moment the past two weekends. Despite that, each girl active or not brought their best to the table. In nearly every match it was enough. By the final game that tank was on empty, though a lot of that is a credit to our opponent who blitzed us and never allowed us to get into a proper rhythm.

Still, despite their mental exhaustion and physical limitations each gave it their all, and finally I couldn’t ask for any more. I’m so thankful for each of them, they inspire me every single day.

On a side note, HUGE thanks to Jackie and Summer for subbing for us this weekend. It was a pleasure coaching you both again. Thank you to Coach G as well, it’s refreshing being able to work alongside you. Looking forward to competing against you all in CRL and beyond.
