A “True Crimes’ Cycling Connection?

We don’t often think about crime and cycling, at least not when it comes to violence.

But the Allied ABLE is an exception.

The Able and its unique design got its public debut at a marquee 200-mile gravel race, then known as Dirty Kanza, in 2019. Colin Strickland, a relatively unknown pro rider, rode it to a surprise victory.

Allied and Rapha, one of Strickland's sponsors, celebrated this accomplishment with a limited production, special edition frame. Irvine Bicycles managed to snag two of them.This is a pic of the one at the shop.

Things for Strickland weren’t quite so stellar afterwards, both in cycling and his personal life. And no one took much notice until a romantic entanglement led to murder and a story that swept the tabloids.

In 2022, Strickland became friendly with Moriah “Mo” Wilson, an up-and-coming pro cyclist in her own right. “Friendly” morphed into a romance. This did not sit well with Colin’s girlfriend, Kaitlyn Armstrong. Mo was found in a friend’s apartment, lying in a pool of blood. Dead from a gunshot wound.

Armstrong was a clear suspect, but before charges were filed she disappeared. A local search became an international manhunt. It was fruitless for 43 days. On Day 44 a plastic-surgery transformed Armstrong was arrested in Costa Rica, where she’d been working as a yoga instructor under a pseudonym.

Oh - our ABLES have a crime story, too. The partner of the one we still have was stolen in a brazen daylight robbery. The owner had just returned home from a ride. When he went into his house to open the garage he got distracted for a few seconds. Something caught his peripheral vision from a side window, and he knew it was person on a bike. His bike. The thief left an old Trek mountain bike. The bike never resurfaced.

So, if you like odd or unique cycling, collectibles. this one’s still available. It’s a hell of a lot more interesting than a gold Campy wine opener, eh?
