The characters Akira Toriyama created didn't just teach us about the nature of the warrior spirit, they exemplified and embodied it. Generations have derived their inspiration to workout and train from a desire to emulate Goku and his indomitable commitment to self defense and self improvement. With a heavy heart, Iowa City Kung Fu joins the global martial arts community in mourning the passage of a creator who encouraged many of us to take our first steps in a lifelong journey. May he rest in Peace.

The four big punches of Guangzhou Wing Chun (aka Yuen Kay San Wing Chun) develop short power that allow the player to produce fight stoping force in extremely close range. This post by my friend Jesper is a part of a much larger project that he and his wife have under taken to raise visibility of mainland boxing styles in the Pearl River Delta. The degree of care and respect that he has for each of these styles is a model to aspire to. This particular post is about the style of Wing Chun we practice at Iowa City Kung Fu, and so I hope you enjoy it and the short video as much as I did.

An interesting report on a study that finds that the play of forms improves scores on a test of memory. While the article focuses on taichi, I guess that many traditional martial artist would find this experience familiar to them. There is something about the study of forms that is feels sustaining and enriching of our whole lives.

Research shows that a daily dose of tai chi, the slow-moving meditative, martial art can boost our body and brain. A new study finds adding word games to tai chi doubles the increase in memory.

With start of fall and it's cooler weather we will be conducting our night classes in Cortado: 26 S Clinton St, Iowa City, IA 52240. Classes will be Monday and Wednesday nights 7:30-9PM.

We will also have a class on Saturday Mornings from 10-11:30AM at Lucas street, open to all current students.
