Nearly 6 weeks ago we got back from High Plains Raceway and I (Davis) failed to share a single social media update. As CJ often says, I am the worst millennial ever.
The team brought the #21 car (Tanya) back to Minnesota with a couple trophies and only minor bodywork repairs and maintenance to do prior to the now fast-approaching race at Ozarks. If our math is right, those two wins secured the WRL Mid-West GP2 Championship. We are so grateful for our good fortune and the fantastic racing we have enjoyed all year. Getting on the podium with such competition is no small feat!
Friday qualifying went well. It was crazy hot on track (99 fahrenheit) and the cooling system on the car was barely keeping up. We tested a number of thermostat settings and fuel mixtures in order to get the car running cool enough to last the weekend.
The Saturday race was a bit lonely. CJ started very well, only to have our two main competitor cars in class break early in the first stint. Over the next 6 hours we built an enormous lead. We parked the car with over a 70-lap lead and hour to go in the race in order to save it for a tougher battle the next day.
Good thing we did. The Sunday 8-hour race was a constant battle with #22 TCS MX-5 (the former Chillout GP2 champion from years past). It was well driven and very fast by some great guys - a true pleasure to race with them.
After the first stint CJ had built a 30 second lead, which we extended slightly with yet another fast pit stop by Matt, Cam and Wayne. Davis went in and caught the car to put it a lap down. Then mayhem broke loose as a big wreck happened right in front of Davis. He avoided issues but in doing so the 22 car got back past. The pace car came out directly in between us, effectively giving the #22 car an entire lap back. Good luck for them.
Davis came in for fuel and stayed in the car, coming back out as the rain started coming down hard. And while he had the pace to build a gap again, he picked up a 1-lap penalty for "unsafe re-entry" after recovering from a minor spin in the wet. By the end of his double stint we were back in the lead by 30 seconds. Cole took over and successfully held on to that lead, leaving CJ very little margin to try to bring home the lead. Even though he was nursing a grumpy shifter, CJ laid down great laps and brought home the win.
Great car prep by our North Loop crew, fast stops and great driving made for a super-fun weekend. Thank you , and for helping us be fast and reliable!
As we left Colorado we had a small GP2 National Championship lead, which Harrison Motorsport promptly took back the next race. It will be an exhilarating battle to the finish and we welcome you all to follow along! Next up is Ozarks International Raceway in a couple weeks... Let the fun continue!
