“Baseball coaches act as leaders. They motivate players to succeed by being fair, positive, patient, sincere, concerned and honest. Baseball success requires teamwork. While one basketball player might take 40 percent of his team's shots, baseball teams count on all nine batters in a lineup. On defense, a single out might require the contributions of three or four players. Therefore, coaches look for ways to build camaraderie among players and reward players with increased playing time. At the pro level, this coaching helps develop the best prospects for a chance to advance through the minor leagues to Major League Baseball. A Great Coach uses Talent Evaluation

The best coaches build their teams by spotting talented players during high school tryouts, college recruiting visits and pro scouting trips. They watch for players with strong arms, good hand-eye coordination, fast hands and feet and outstanding core strength. Strong-armed players might make good pitchers, while tall, strong players could serve as the team's power hitters. Coaches look for potential outfielders, who must have strong arms and the speed to cover the gaps, and potential infielders, who require quick feet and soft hands.
