💡 Workforce Wednesday Article 💡
Your Job Title Is Not Your Career: Build Beyond the Position
One of the easiest things to do when we have been in a position for a while is to begin defining ourselves by our job title.
“I’m an analyst.”
“I’m an administrative assistant.”
“I’m a teacher.”
“I’m a program manager.”
“I’m a GS-9, GS-11, or GS-12.”
But your job title is not your career.
Your job title describes the position you currently hold. Your career includes the knowledge you have gained, the problems you have solved, the people you have helped, the skills you have developed, and the experiences you are continuing to build. That distinction matters.
You can be excellent at your current job and still prepare for what comes next. In fact, you should.
Professional development does not mean you are planning to leave your organization. Updating your résumé does not mean you are unhappy. Taking a course does not mean you think you know everything. Asking for a developmental assignment does not mean you are dissatisfied with your current responsibilities.
It means you are taking responsibility for your career.
Think about the last year.
What new skill have you developed?
What problem did you solve?
What responsibility did you take on that was not originally part of your position?
What training or certification did you complete?
What measurable difference did your work make?
Who have you learned from, and who have you helped develop?
Leadership is not limited to supervisors or people with “leader” in their title. Everyone has opportunities to lead, encourage, share knowledge, set an example, and help develop the people around them. You are a leader too, so act accordingly.
And here is an important one:
Could you explain your value without simply repeating your job description?
Sometimes we become so focused on doing the job in front of us that we stop paying attention to the career we are building around it.
Then an opportunity appears.
A promotion opens.
An organization restructures.
A new supervisor arrives.
Technology changes the work.
A dream position becomes available.
Or life simply takes us in another direction.
That is not the time to start trying to remember everything you accomplished during the last three years.
Keep track of your accomplishments while they are happening. Continue learning. Build relationships. Volunteer for opportunities that stretch you, and dare I say, even scare you. Understand how your work contributes to the larger mission. Keep your résumé current, even when you are not actively looking for another job.
Always think positively, and most importantly, don’t be afraid to fail.
And do not limit your professional identity to the title printed underneath your name. The position you hold today is part of your professional journey, but it does not define your entire career.
Your career is the story you are still writing.
💡 Workforce Wednesday Question: If your job title disappeared tomorrow, what skills, accomplishments, knowledge, and experience would you still bring to the table?
That answer tells you much more about your career than your title ever could.
Now let’s get at it! I believe in you!
P.S. And yes, that’s a generated image inspired by my real puppies. Their management style is questionable, but their enthusiasm is unmatched.😂🐾💙
