Apparently, this scene took place the night before the USA faced Germany in their third group-stage game. Jordan had spent over an hour playing ping pong against Charles Barkley for cash, eventually wearing him down until Barkley, frustrated and out of money, conceded.

Meanwhile, Bird had been drinking heavily with Patrick Ewing. Ewing later admitted that, while he had disliked Bird for most of his career, the Olympics turned them into close friends. With his back problems forcing him into semi-retirement mode, Bird approached the Games like a vacation with much younger teammates, drinking nightly.

The following day, Team USA routed Germany 111–68. Bird tallied 19 points in 21 minutes with 70% shooting, spending the other 19 minutes lying face down on the bench to ease his back pain. Jordan logged 15 points and 12 assists at 70% shooting without breaking a sweat, Barkley dropped 14 points in a short burst, and Ewing managed 4 points on 2-of-7 shooting.

Bird later quipped, “Pat couldn’t keep up with my pace—and I’m not talking about basketball.”
