Our first Birds on Bikes group covered 15 miles and saw TWENTY THREE species of birds today! Highlights included three Barred Owls, a Mississippi Kite, a Green Heron, and a Red-Headed Woodpecker. And as is typical for Wheeler, lots of other wildlife was spotted along the way: one alligator, two snakes, two fox squirrels, a turtle, and a coyote!

We will do several of these rides throughout the year to see as many of the ~300 species of birds that live at Wheeler as possible, so be on the lookout for info on more of them! If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to message

Want to learn more about a hobby you can easily do from your bike? Join us for our first Birds on Bikes ride! 🐦 🚲

We will discuss the basics of birdwatching and learn some important skills before departing for a ~14 mile loop of Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge around the Blackwell Swamp and Buckeye areas. We will have at least 4 designated “birding stops” but be prepared to stop more depending on what we see! This is primarily a birding tour, so don’t expect an intense workout, but we are covering a good bit of mileage 😆

Bring binoculars if at all possible, as well as a bag or some way of attaching them to you/your bike.

Space is limited so that we can maximize our chances of seeing the most species, so register by emailing [email protected] or message
