WHY UPWARD?
Simply put, a basketball changed all our lives. My daughter loved basketball and we came to Upward of Huntington to play after her school bball program had ended for the year. After playing with Upward and making great new friends, I decided as a single dad to bring my kids to River Cities Community Church one Sunday for service and check things out. We were instantly welcomed as family and felt we found our Church home. My kids did not know Christ before this because we never went to Church, so we started coming every Sunday and over some period of time both Tucker and Tyler gave themselves to Christ and I reaffirmed my commitment to Jesus. Essentially, we all came to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and we're baptized by Pastor Scott Duncan at River Cities Community Church. We still played Upward Basketball and eventually Charlie Hagley decided to step down as league director and asked me if I had any interest in continuing the program as his replacement. Jesus Christ, through Upward, changed me and my kids lives so I naturally said yes to leading the program. During that time as Director, I met my wife Carla Ann Hebert at an Upward game and we started talking. God had brought me a wonderful Christian woman I could talk to and take walks with through Barboursville park on a daily basis. Soon afterwards, Pastor Scott married Carla and I at River Cities Community Church with our familes and closest friends present. That is how God used a basketball in my life...what will he use in yours? After 10 years leading the Upward Basketball ministry, Carla and I are saying thank you and moving on to what God has planned next for us. We want to thank all the wonderful families that brought their kids to this great Christian ministry and all the volunteers we had the privilege of working with over the years and the RC3 staff for this amazing journey. On behalf of my wife, myself and my children, God bless all of you and thank you for some of the best years of our lives.
Sincerely,
Vince Hebert
The fall Upward Basketball ministry will continue and more info will be posted in future months.
