When it comes to athletic training one of the most valuable assets an athlete can possess is the ability to absorb and redirect force. One category remains superior in training this modality above anything else and that is Plyometrics.

Most of what we see being called “plyometrics” today are actually incorrect. The actual Russian translation from creator Yuri Verkhoshansky, means shock method. In order for something to be considered plyometric it must be max effort with an eccentric emphasis or overload…period, or else it isn’t truly a plyometric.

Many of what we see today are jumps, hops, runs, etc which are done in high volume at sub-maximal levels thus categorizing them as non-plyometric. However this does not mean these are not just as important. Pre-plyometrics are crucial in training an athlete’s tissues, tendons, ligaments, and muscles for preparing them to receive force. This lower level of intensity and conditioning is paramount in preparing the body for the higher levels of true plyometrics. Plyometrics are king because the simultaneously develop injury prevention and the athleticism.

Simple but sadistic. Pick a kettlebell and move with it for 30 minutes non stop. The rules are easy, the movement can be infinitely varied but the weight can never be put down for a 30 min duration. Complexity isn’t always the answer. More often than not, simplicity can be more effective.
