Sports in Kansas 3A Team to Watch

Hugoton enters the 2026 season looking to reload after graduating a talented senior class that helped the Eagles post an 8-2 record in 2025. Head coach Jay Witt has built a strong foundation over the past six seasons, and while there are plenty of new roles to fill, the program returns eight starters and a number of players who saw significant varsity action last fall.

“We lost a LOT of GREAT Seniors last year.....and we will need to find players who will step up....BUT with the Flexbone culture being in place for the past 6 years....we have a GREAT base of young men that know the system and know what we expect....WE go to WAR with who we got....TIME TO RELOAD!!!” Coach Witt said.

Isia Guardado will be one of the key players to watch after rushing for more than 1,000 yards as a junior and earning all-state recognition from several outlets. Guardado returns at fullback and linebacker and gives Hugoton an experienced two-way presence. Aquiles Aguilera also returns after starting multiple years on the offensive line, earning all-Great West Activities Conference honors last season and winning a state championship in powerlifting.

The Eagles also have several other returning players who could make a significant impact. Talon Grubbs returns on the defensive line, while Adrian Adigun brings plenty of athletic ability at wide receiver and cornerback. Adigun was a lockdown corner last season, showed strong hands as a receiver and won a state championship in the triple jump, giving Hugoton another explosive athlete to work with.

Sports in Kansas Football Player to Watch: Isai Guardado, 5-10, 190, Hugoton, Sr. RB/LB

Isai Guardado enters his senior season as one of the top returning playmakers in Class 3A after a breakout junior campaign for Hugoton. The senior rushed for 1,095 yards and 22 touchdowns on 185 carries while adding 173 receiving yards and another score, earning First Team All-State honors at running back and First Team Sports in Kansas Non-Senior All-State recognition at linebacker after previously earning Second Team All-State honors as a sophomore. Guardado helped lead the Eagles to an 8-2 record and will once again be counted on to make an impact on both sides of the football alongside teammates Adrian Adigun and Aquiles Aguilera.

"I'm excited to get this season started and compete with my teammates," Guardado said. "My goal is to keep improving every day, do whatever it takes to help the team win, and make a big impact." One thing many people may not know is that Guardado played center all the way through his sophomore year before making the move to running back, a transition that has helped turn him into one of western Kansas' most productive offensive weapons. With another strong offseason behind him, he'll look to build on last year's success and help push Hugoton deeper into the postseason.

Our varsity finished off their summer by going 2-2 at the Seward County Team Camp!

We were a little short handed this week, but these guys stepped up & competed. Our young guys got some varsity experience & our older guys showed great leadership!

Our JV finished off their summer by going 4-0 at the Seward County Team Camp! They picked up wins over Liberal, South Gray, SW Heights & Guymon.

They put it a lot of work this summer & it’s going to be fun to watch their development the next few years.

Took a small group of freshmen & sophomores this weekend to compete in the JV division at the Salina MAYB Tournament. The boys finished with a record of 1-3 but played hard & gained a lot of valuable experience. Proud of their efforts this weekend!

Good luck to Cameron Rosas as he represents the USA in the U18 Boys Basketball Division at the 2026 Lisbon Basketball Youth Cup in Portugal this weekend!
