**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays research meme features dry patches beneath the saddle after exercise. More work is needed to understand the cause of the dry patches. Saddle pressures are a primary cause, however we have seen dry patches appear in saddles that are correctly fitted and have a uniformed pressure distribution. There are other factors which may cause dry patches such as previous trauma or skin damage. Over arching outcome, if you have dry patches beneath the saddle, it is important to discuss them with your saddle fitter and equine team.

In my experience, most saddles that slip sideways, go off to the right side. It probably isn't a coincidence that some 80% of horses are right forelimb dominant meaning they are harder to bend to the right. That is similar to people, where around 80% are right handed.

**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays MEME is relating to saddle slip and the importance of working as a team to ask the β€œwhy”, and then make a plan on how best to support the horse and rider. Often it is thought that the β€œrider” is the cause of saddle slip, whilst we must consider the rider, we need to establish the β€œprimary” cause, and based on multiple studies, saddle slip is initiated by the horse and not the rider. Pursing a rider alone approach to resolving saddle slip is not advantageous, and can often allow subtle asymmetries to develop.

**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays MEME is relating to the importance of correct bridle fit and design. In a previous study, we found areas of high pressure in the region of the TMJ and base of ears, and when the pressures were reduced with bridle modifications, the horses locomotion was altered. We must not underestimate the importance of correct bridle design and fit πŸ€“

**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

In a new series for 2023 we will be sharing an evidence based nugget of information each week. Our goal is to advance knowledge from an evidence based perspective. We have a wide range of MEME’s covering multiple areas of equine sports science.

Todays MEME is relating to girth length/buckle height - here the girth is too low πŸ€“
