Beloved clients & friends - many of you know I have a competition coming up on November 16th. What you may not know is that it is hosted by an organization called . I have an opportunity to fundraise through this organization, so I’m asking for your help in doing that. I think we all appreciate that nearly every family has to deal with this difficult disease at some point. In the 13 years ATC has existed, multiple clients have been afflicted and gone through treatments. Currently, there are two active clients who are dealing with it in real time. Thanks to organizations like this, all of the clients I have known have received successful treatments. Of course, not all folks have this much success and cancer has been one of the top 2 leading causes of death for nearly 70 years. If you are able, please consider supporting this cause and helping fund treatments for this complicated disease. The link to my fundraising page is in the bio. Thank you all for your consideration.

Happy Juneteenth!

Sometimes it's hard not to feel like we're going backwards as a society these days (book banning, abortion rights, etc etc). BUT let's look at it a different way.

~Texas did not recognize the Emancipation Proclamation or the end of the Civil War until the Union Army marched in and enforced it on June 19, 1865. Slaves in Texas were finally freed--two years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation actually had made it official.

~100 years later, in the summer of 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed, in an effort to end discriminatory voting practices in many southern states.

~55 years after that, in the summer of 2020, Black Lives Matter protests erupted throughout the country, in response to the discriminatory and violent treatment of Black suspects by police.

~only ONE YEAR later, in 2021, Juneteenth became the 11th Federal Holiday in the US.

Until only a few years ago, many people in this country had never even heard of Juneteenth. Yet now, our country recognizes it as a second Independence Day.

There's still unrest; there's still discrimination. But let's take a moment to recognize that, on this day, only 156 years ago, EVERY human being who lived in this country FINALLY became free.

Even though it took two full years to reach them, June 19 was still a day for celebration. And though it's taken over 150 years, our country is finally recognizing Juneteenth. That's progress--slow and late--but, like that original day in Texas, still cause for celebration.

Thursday suffer-fest for and me. We climbed the Manitou Incline which has been a goal of mine for a few years. It's 2,768 steps, going up 2,000ft of elevation in just .88 miles (finishing at an altitude of 8,550), making it the steepest trail I've ever attempted. Of course, the temperature was also a huge factor, varying from 87-92 degrees. We did not sit down a single time, though we stopped often during the first half. Then Bettie somehow discovered a weird cadence/ step pattern that, while surely looked odd, kept us ascending consistently for the steeper, second half. We ascended in 1:15, just narrowly missing the world record of 16:42 🤣. We ran down the ~2.5mile Barr trail to finish, and will now consume good amounts of protein and whiskey (IPA for her).
