Full transparency… while I spend every day helping my clients with their goals, I’ve been neglecting mine. So I decided to hold myself accountable and get back on track. I know what it takes, I’ve done it before, and I relay what I’ve learned to others; and now it’s time to focus more on myself.
When we talk about “calorie deficit” I don’t think we all understand what that looks like and how even a weekend can destroy it and even cause weight GAIN.
I’ve hit my workouts, I’ve made better food choices. It’s easier to think “I did well, why isn’t the scale moving” but that’s why TRACKING is key. Fun? No. Tedious? Yes. So important. And here’s why…
I spent the week in a clear deficit. Then Friday hit and I had some pizza late at night AFTER I already had my allotted calories. Then Saturday hit, my anniversary, and everything went off the rails. But, I knew exactly what I was doing. I was making decisions and I was tracking them. It doesn’t matter that I didn’t like what I was seeing. Not tracking doesn’t mean I didn’t eat it. My body is keeping track. So I ate what I wanted when I wanted and the amount I wanted, and just tracked every bite.
I had a biscuit for breakfast that had chicken, egg, cheese, and bacon… not anything unusual for the American diet but definitely a rare treat for me. Same concept with going out to dinner. You can see how that became a 5000+ day! Something that seems impossible! And fyi, there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat. Also, now, my average weekly intake is 1000 calories more than it should be for weight loss. Something I spent a week working on… obliterated.
So you see, when you hear about tracking, this is why it’s important. A weekend can quite literally pull you out of weight loss mode and straight into weight GAIN mode. Thinking we did well, it’s just a couple meals, is not the same as actually making choices that align with our goals.
So be honest with yourself. Track everything! See where you land, and make adjustments.
