As many of you know, I have three children all of whom are 2nd degree black belts or higher. As the children of the head instructor, they had very little say on whether or not they were going to class; they were whether they wanted to or not! It was often 5 days a week for several hours and there were some heated discussions about them staying home so they could watch TV, go on the internet, hang out etc...

I recently got a call from my oldest daughter, Katelyn. She currently lives and works in New York City. As she was out walking one day she was attacked. A man who she believes was on drugs grabbed her and then bear hugged her from the front. Katelyn, with a few well placed strikes told me she broke the man's jaw. The man ran off and the police have yet to apprehend him. Apart from the stress from the experience she was fine. Afterward, she thanked me for not giving in to her complaints about going to class. If I did, it would have been a very different story I am telling today. I also want to add that my other two children thanked me as well for making them go to class as they said that martial arts has helped shape them into becoming the people they are today.

I would like to thank Grandmaster K*m Sung. If not for his knowledge and teachings I would not have been able to help my daughter and again, I would be telling you a different story today.

At our last tournament there was a competitor who is extraordinarily shy. When introducing himself for the first event I thought he was going to run to his parents. With a few words of encouragement, he didn’t and managed to complete his form but at the end he was a nervous wreck. His score wasn’t as bad as he thought, in fact he did well. He did not place in that event, but with the knowledge and confidence that he could do it, he did better on his weapon form and even better on his breaks which he received 3rd and 2nd place, respectively. However, seeing the look in his eyes I knew he received something even more. He gained the knowledge that if he could face this fear he could face the next hurdle with the knowledge that he has the strength within him and I know he left that tournament a better person than when came in. The amount of work that the masters put into a tournament is very demanding and the reason we do so is for our students. It takes a lot of hard work and practice to prepare for the tournament and courage to demonstrate something in front of a large crowd. Our tournaments are meant to be an educational and character building experience. Regardless of whether a student wins first place or not, any student that decides to put in the hard work practicing for the tournament and then demonstrating to a crowded gymnasium full of strangers, that student is a winner.

Our black belt test is unlike our other tests. The test has five parts, katas, one steps and hapkidos, stances, blocks and kicks, weapons and the final part is with Grandmaster K*m Sung the leader of our organization. Not only is there a lot of knowledge on the test, the student must also demonstrate the techniques at a black belt level. I want to congratulate Lyla Norville for passing the final part of her test last week. Lyla, like her sister Hailey, started training with me when she was eighteen months. Lyla is now six years old. The black belt presentation ceremony is during belt testing which is on December 6th.
