Final tally for the 2023 GCO hunting competition.

Coming in 4th place with a score of 37.6 is Tanner Edmonds!

Coming in 3rd with 143.6 points is Jacob with a 135 inch estimated buck, 3 pigs and 1 coyote.

Coming in 2nd place and giving it a nice run for the money is Traven Bagley with a score of exactly 280. 2 bucks scored 299 with 2 coyotes brought his score to 305. However, an unfortunate miss with a muzzleloader cost him in the end with a deduction of 25 points.

And the winner of the 2023 GCO hunting contest is Colby Nichols! A 152 inch buck on public land, 4 does, 3 pigs and 2 coyotes brings his total score to 309.5.

Kansas pays off again for after seeing this buck during late season last year he was one of the target bucks this year. He started hitting the ag field hard and was consistently hitting the same field. picked his time to go and made it count! Congratulations on a great deer!

Finally caught up to the target buck on the home place. I didn’t really have a clue as to where this buck might be but after talking to my Dad yesterday he said he saw a good buck while he was feeding cows in a completely different spot than I would’ve expected him. I went in to that new spot this morning thinking I was hunting a new buck when he stepped out on top of the hill with the sun on him. I immediately noticed his kicker on his left side and knew it was him.

I have watched this buck now for 3 years and he really made a jump this year to what he is now.

After a midday camera run I found that this buck had moved to a completely different part of the ranch. He stayed true to routine and just like last year he went to the same oak ridge during muzzloader season where I was able to get a shot at him tonight. We passed on this buck all season last year and he had the size and age that made him a shooter this year. Jackson tracked him and my family was there for the recovery which makes the entire story that much more special.

ND trifecta. Limit of pheasant, 5 grouse and a partridge. The more I hunt with Kota the more I realize what a special dog he is. Best day of hunting I’ve had with him and even though he was wore smooth out he kept going with all he had. What a day.
