One thing I’ve learned about teaching:

Every student learns differently.

Some students learn by watching.
Some by asking questions.
Some by jumping right in and making moves.

My goal is to meet students where they are — helping them grow in confidence, focus, patience, and critical thinking one move at a time.

Chess is more than a game. It is a tool for growth. ♟️

Chess is about much more than learning how pieces move.

It teaches students how to think ahead.

How to slow down before reacting.

How to problem solve.

How to be patient.

How to build confidence in their decisions.

One of the things I enjoy most is watching students begin to believe in themselves — one move at a time.

One of my favorite moments during our recent chess session:

Watching students step up to the board and think through a position in front of others.

At first, many students hesitate.

Then something changes…

They begin raising their hand. Asking questions. Thinking ahead. Believing in their ideas.

That confidence matters.

Chess is more than pieces on a board — it teaches patience, focus, decision-making, and courage to think independently.

And sometimes growth starts with one move.

Watching students step to the board and think through their decisions in front of others.

Chess has a way of building confidence.

Sometimes a student begins hesitant…

Then a few moves later, they are raising their hand, thinking critically, and believing in themselves.

What started as an idea is beginning to take shape.

Seeing students engaged, asking questions, and thinking through positions reminded me exactly why this matters.

Chess changed my life.

Now I get to share those lessons with the next generation — strategy, patience, focus, and confidence.

This is only the beginning for TD² Chess Academy. ♟️

One of my favorite parts of teaching chess is watching a student slow down and start thinking differently. ♟️

At first, many students just want to move quickly.

But then something changes.

They begin asking questions.
Thinking ahead.
Looking for patterns.
Learning patience.

Chess teaches more than strategy.

It builds confidence, focus, discipline, and critical thinking — skills that go far beyond the board.

This is what TD² Chess Academy is all about.

One of my favorite moments from this week: the hands going up. ♟️🙋🏾‍♂️🙋🏽‍♀️

Questions.

Curiosity.

Students thinking through possibilities before making a move.

That’s one of the beautiful things about chess — it teaches young people to slow down, think critically, and trust themselves enough to try.

This week, I had the opportunity to introduce students to strategy, note-taking, and thinking ahead through chess.

The goal is bigger than the game.

We’re building confidence, patience, discipline, and stronger thinkers — one move at a time. ♟️🧠

You don’t need expensive equipment to start learning chess. ♟️

Tonight, I made a chess board out of construction paper as a reminder:

Sometimes creativity has to meet opportunity.

For parents, students, or youth who may not have access to a chess set right now — don’t let that stop the learning.

Use paper. Use imagination. Start somewhere.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is growth. ♟️🧠

The morning of May 15 at Impact Leadership Academy was a special occasion. ♟️

One of the biggest lessons I try to teach young people through chess is this:

Before you move, think.

Chess teaches patience. Discipline. Confidence. Problem-solving. And sometimes, the courage to slow down and believe you can figure it out.

Watching students engage, ask questions, and step up to the board reminded me that this is bigger than chess.

We’re building thinkers. One move at a time. ♟️🧠 TD² Chess Academy and Impact Leadership Academy, a powerful combination!

Today reminded me why I love chess. ♟️

We explored the basics, asked questions, learned strategy, and most importantly — built confidence.

Chess is more than a game. It teaches patience, discipline, critical thinking, and how to slow down before making a move.

Seeing students engaged, curious, and raising their hands this morning meant a lot. This is only the beginning.

Tonight, I made a chessboard out of construction paper.

Why?

Because I never want a parent or child to think: “We cannot learn chess because we don’t have a chess set.” If you have paper, a marker, and imagination, you can begin! Chess is not just for people with resources. Chess belongs to everyone.♟️To parents and youth: do not let a lack of equipment stop curiosity.
