3D printed my variable length rapier hanger template and used it to draw one of the lengths on some paper. It worked as designed. This will help to make various length tests with paper or thin foam in until I dial in which works best for my dual dagger hangers. I’m very pleased with how it works.

Today's modification...

Decided to go back to a point peak top/bottom and flat sides (upd: flattened the peaks a little).

I'm also thinking 5oz leather wrap, so 1/64 per oz? we'll see. Made a 1" deep 5/64 gap around the blade and tip diameter for leather wrap cap to be formed into the cavity but then transition to a 15/128 gap for the ricasso and 3/4 dia blade tip. 6" transition gap for the blade to align into. The leather in the throat should help with a friction fit to hold it firmly in place. We'll see if all of this over thinking all works. :

For purists, you may want to look away, lol.😉

Recently I had some free time and as an attempt to re-ignight my scabbard/hanger project I’m trying a proof of concept by 3d modeling and 3d printing a test piece for a plastic scabbard core.

This first test section showed me the taper to ricasso is longer than I expected so it stopped short of seating…I’ll fix that.

Once the bugs are worked out I’ll print 5 sections (for an 18” dagger) and glue them together to see how I like it.

Stay tuned. :)

Leather template for the wooden core:

Slowly rolling the wooden scabbard on packing paper marking edge lines along the way. Taking measurements and building a CAD model. Printed template.

The center area is on the front face of the scabbard where some design tooling similar to the belt pattern might look cool.

Upd: I did not account for a tip cap and hilt shoulder to the front face area so that area will shrink some. This is why we plan before acting. 😉

And add some leather at the top and bottom because I measured exactly the 21” of the wood scabbard.

The width is based on the thought of a butt connection and a baseball stitch.

Panning continues. :)

Perhaps a wild idea, What about an acrylic template? 0.065" gap for a scratch awl. I don't have a laser or CNC so this is simply an idea at the moment as I contemplate repeatability.

6 buckle, 9 buckle, and belt patterns printed and taped.
Before I do ANY leather cutting/tooling I feel that I need A LOT more practice and a solid plan. :)

So now the question is whether my calculations and overall process can also be applied to the sword (42”) versus the daggers (18”). We’ll see. ;)

The first Monday of each month for 2 hours there is a Barony “populous” meeting. There is a zoom option but for my first I figured that I’d show up in person. This will be my first so I have no idea what to expect. They mentioned a newcomer segment toward the end so we’ll see.

Funny coincidence is that the Gulf Coast Woodturners meet at this same community hall.

Update: The meeting was interesting. Met some people and heard lots of new things as well as a newcomer handout about SCA terms. Looking forward to future meetings.

6 buckle hanger design:

This image in PDF form will be printed 1:1 scale on 17x11 and carbon transferred for repeatable pattern accuracy. There will be a second layer stitched to the back for stiffening and support for the cincher belt. There are so many variations that making all of this is a matter of artistic license as much as trying to follow traditional appearance.

The dimensions are based on my foam prototype testing but there will be no real knowing until I actually try it with leather.

Having a mentor to guide me has of course been a huge help but finding ways not to do things by simply diving in without fear is also good teacher. ;)
