- TMJ -
aka Lock Jaw
aka Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction

Our client Katie has been suffering with TMJ for quite some time. Between the work of Aungst Restorative Therapy, a chiropractor and a TMJ/Jaw specialist we are able to help her immensely.

TMJ: pain and compromised movement of the jaw joint and surrounding muscles that control jaw movement, which include the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles. TMJ disorder can cause people to experience pain that affects their face, jaw, neck and even upper back. Upwards of 70% of those diagnosed with TMJ report having neck pain as a symptom.

The temporomandibular joint connects your lower jaw to your skull and acts like a sliding hinge. Chronic stiffness in neck, shoulders and upper back can therefore directly affect the function of your jaw joints.

People suffering with this condition may experience pain while smiling, laughing, talking, chewing, swallowing, along with clicking, locking in your jaw, headaches and ringing in your ears.

Causes:
⁃ stress
⁃ genetics
⁃ arthritis in jaw joint
⁃ grinding of teeth or clenching
⁃ jaw injury (broken or dislocated)
⁃ malocclusion (when your teeth don’t properly fit together as they should)

A popular form of treatment that can be used to enhance our sports and medical sessions is cupping. However, a question I hear frequently is “are the cupping marks bruises?”

Cupping marks are often called “bruises”…however this is an incredibly common misconception.

A bruise is defined as a response to an injury- appearing as an area of discolored skin on the body, caused by a blow or impact rupturing underlying blood vessels which is painful and causes traumatic damage to the tissue.

While cupping promotes blood flow to the compromised area, cupping marks occur when stagnation or interstitial debris is surfaced and released within the various layers of soft tissue which enhances circulation and helps to increase the body's own healing processes. I like to describe it as, “working from the inside-out.”

Focused blood flow helps your body by flushing built-up toxins through the lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system is responsible for eliminating your body's toxins and waste.

Keep in mind that each mark signifies any issues hidden under the surface.

For any questions or interests in cupping feel free to reach out to us!!

You don’t perform at championship levels on game day without putting in the dirty work during the days, the nights, the weeks and the months when no one is watching or there cheering you on.

STAY READY SO YOU AIN’T GOTTA GET READY

Off-Season Checklist:
• Muscle Mass + Durability
helps ensure athletes are prepared to withstand inevitable contact on the field. Increasing muscle mass through strength training and proper nutrition allows athletes to reach a size that allows them to compete safely by improving their overall durability.

• Explosiveness
the best football players get off the line quicker, sprint faster, and make more powerful blocks than the less-explosive athlete. An athlete’s ability to be explosive is directly related to their ability to express high levels of force. Athletes that possess greater strength levels have the potential to produce more explosive power.

• Injury Prevention
in addition to the neuromuscular benefits of ingraining good movement patterns, strength training improves an athlete's resilience on the field by strengthening muscles, bones, and connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments. Two of the most commonly injured parts of the body in football are the knees and ankles. We want to ensure proper range of motion in joint mobility and muscle flexibility.

Always great to watch you power through the process and progress!
