Today’s semi final matches for the U13 and U15 squads were played out in Downingtown today in horrible weather the likes of which we have not seen in at least 7 days. U13 kicked off first vs Conestoga. Although Blackthorn has bested Conestoga earlier in the season, the team that took the field for them today seemed to have added a couple or 3 additional skilled players. Winning today would not come easy. A slow and sloppy start to the match opened up a bit 10 minutes in with a beautiful poach and run by Eli Mendez. Conestoga quickly answered with a converted try, which was countered by another Eli try ( Bryce Riemel conversion) and then another Stoga converted try to close the half with Blackthorn down 12-14.
The second half started with a quick unconverted try by Eli, giving him another 3 try game, and giving Blackthorn back the lead, 17-14. Blackthorn would surrender another try to Conestoga, and the lead, but that would end the scoring for them, Conestoga up 17-19.
With roughly 20 minutes remaining, the young Blackthorn team locked down and played some incredible defense. Blackthorn took the lead on a great penalty play from the 22 meter line. Tommy Gonce took the ball down to the 2 meter line where Tyler Friel took the ball off the back of the tuck and dove in for the go ahead try. Conversion by Bryce. A trip to the state championship game was locked down by Colin Walker with a picture perfect poach and run and a try between the posts. Bryce closed the scoring out with his 3rd conversion of the match. Final score 31-19.
The match was a great example of a team win. Every player, including those that did not see the field, played a part in winning this match.
Next up is the state championship game vs long time rival Doylestown next Sunday and a chance to redeem ourselves from our only loss this season.
Practice Tuesday and Thursday 6:30p at College Settlement Camp.
Congrats on a great win today
